BLM Internet Blackout Sidelines Genealogists

Saturday March 20, 2004
Genealogists looking for U.S. federal land records are finding themselves out of luck, as the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) deals with yet another court-ordered shutdown of its Internet server. On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth pulled the plug on several of the Interior Department's Internet servers after ruling the department has failed to implement effective security measures for its servers which provide Internet access to federal mineral, timber and grazing trust revenues held on behalf of the individual American Indian trust beneficiaries. The order -- part of an 8-year-old lawsuit filed by more than 500,000 class action plaintiffs -- similar shutdowns the court ordered in December 2001 and July 2003. Luckily, the court order doesn't appear to be affecting the Civil War Soldiers & Sailors site as it did during the last two shutdowns. At least not yet!
