1871 Scottish Census Goes Online

Friday March 25, 2005
Continuing with their efforts to provide online access to the country's historical records, the General Register Office for Scotland (GROS) has announced the recent addition of the 1871 Scottish census. The almost 3.5 million new entries provide a goldmine of information for genealogists researching their Scottish heritage.

Scotlands People, an official Web site of the GROS, provides online access to parish records of Scottish births, marriages and deaths dating back to 1553, as well as census data from 1871 to 1901. Future planned additions include indexes and images of Scottish wills and testaments from 1500-1901.

Access to the index and database costs £6 (approximately $9 U.S. or 10 Euros) for 30 'page credits' and allows access for a period of 168 hours.
