A Cemetery Special
Monday October 24, 2005
If you love old cemeteries as much as I do (and what genealogist doesn't), then check out the new PBS special "A Cemetery Special," which premieres this Wednesday, October 26 at 8:00pm ET (check local listings). A second broadcast has also been scheduled for Monday, October 31 at 10:00pm ET on many stations.
A Cemetery Special celebrates some of the old and interesting places where people are buried, beginning right here near my home at the beautiful Allegheny Cemetery and then moving on to Mount Auburn Cemetery in Boston, Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland, Key West Cemetery in Florida and the Historic Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta. During the hour-long special, writer/director/producer Rick Sebak gives a brief overview of the history of cemeteries in America and their role in American culture. He also touches on the different types and styles of grave markers, cemetery feng shui, graveyard art and symbolism, and epitaphs, including one for a deceased hypochonidriac: "I told you I was sick."
