Comments
I have used Legacy Family Tree for many years and it is the only one after trying other that I prefer.
I have tried many different programs, but I prefer Legacy. I really enjoy the control the user has over their data and the seemingly unlimited possibilities. I couldn’t do without the research log capabilities (to-do list), chronology view, ability to source almost every piece of information entered, source and event clipboards, and many other features, to numerous to mention. It esentially combines several programs into one, such as PAF, PAF Insight, GenSmarts, GenMatcher, etc.
I have used Legacy Family Tree for well over five years now; it works really great for me.
I especially like its ability to create pdf and html reports easily and quickly; these then go on CD-ROMs, one for each of my family members.
Another really great feature is its geo data base; now I consistentally have correct spellings of all of my locations.
And finally, although I have not yet used it extensively, Legacy’s new Publishing Center elevates it another step in easing my genealogy publishing burden.
As far as I’m concerned there is no other genealogy database program!
I just bought this program and I’m excited to try out the many features. I haven’t used it enough yet to give a good review but I liked the tutorial that came with it, explaining everything in a very understandable format. I also appreciate their use of colors on the screen as clues to additional information contained within the database.
I recently had purchased Family Tree Maker 2006. Then I discovered the trial for Legacy. After importing my data into Legacy, I was very happy with the vast possibilities. I am considering switching to Legacy completely. I was especially pleased with the ability to change a location spelling only once and being able to affect multiple records. I know there are many features I’ve only begun to find.
I tried Legacy version 3 on my uncle’s reccomendation and loved it. I’m using version 6 now. I find it’s intuitive for me and easy to use. The ease of entering source sitations is one of the best features. I really like the selection of reports, especially the descendent narrative. The chronology feature is also very handy. I’ve adjusted the color format to suit myself. It’s just a great program and I often suggest to friends that they try the free version and see how they like it. I think it proves itself. Legacy frequently updates, adding new tweaks and version 6 is a major update. I’m still learning all the available options. Try it. You will like it
After using Family TreeMaker for many years, I switched to The Master Genealogist. It had all the bells and whistles I wanted but the learning curve was atrocious! I found legacy to have all I wanted from TMG but much easier to use. It far exceeds the usability of FTM
although it falls a little short on publishing.
After trying the download version of legacy, I just bought the deluxe version. I had been using FTM for several years and was unhappy with it enough to make the switch.
I started with Legacy version 3 about 5 years ago and now I am using version 6. The ease of use and almost foolproof data entry checking have sold me on this product. I tried Family Tree Maker & it felt like I was using an elementary school program after years of using a college level program like Legacy. The geo database has been a lifesaver & actually helped remove soom roadblocks by linking families to the same area. The reports are topnotch and very professional looking. I bore my wife & son to tears with my raving about this program!
I have tried both legacy and family tree maker. Legacy is by far the best of the two. I love that with the family view I can quickly see which of the children have spouses and children of their own and which do not, I can mark couples as not being married, never having children, or simply mark an individual as never having married anyone. I can mark children as adopted or biological or as a twin so that when I look at the family view screen I immediately know I haven’t messed up on a birth year. But for me the best feature is marking an individual as living. With all the privacy issues of living people I can with the Deluxe version of Legacy have it search my entire file and mark anyone over 110 (or any age you choose) as not living. I keep the preferences set to automatically use living unless they are over 110 if they do not have death information. That way I don’t accidentally post someone as not living when they are alive and might not want their information out there. I can easily change them to not living if someone died young. It has Master Location lists, master source lists and so much more. I couldn’t possibly tell you all the great features this program has in a review. Try it!!! It’s Worth It!!!!
I LOVE Legacy! I used FTM for years until I found Legacy. The support is great and you don’t have to pay for every little fix or upgrade like you do with FTM. The standard version is free and I recommend it to everyone to try.
I have used Legacy for aboout 2 years and I am still learning what it can do. I was going to get Family Tree Maker but was unhappy with the information that I received. I went to genealogy conference was introduced to Legacy and I love it.
I have used this program, and like its easy - to- use format. i finally! figured out how to add photos, and this makes the program more personal for me
Like most people, I started with FTM and upgraded through several versions, never being entirely satisfied. After reading about Legacy and all of it’s features, I thought this is too good to be true, especially for the price. Thought about it for a couple of months, figured it’s worth a try. That was v.5. I’ve upgraded to v.6 and there is no way I’d switch to anything else. Oh, did I mention their support? One can speak directly with a real, live person named Jim who knows the product inside and out and will answer even the dumbest questions.
I was looking for free genealogy software, and happened upon Legacy. Even though I have not upgraded to the pay version (yet!), I am pleased with both the ease of use, and the support that is provided. I have been working on my family tree for only a year or two, and with the Research Guidance feature, Legacy makes it easy for me to know what to do next.
Prior to using Legacy, I had used Family Tree for years. I purchased Legacy at version 3 and am now at version 5. Legacy is more versatile, not only for publishing in pdf/text/html, but also when editing. I love the fact that I can use the Name Index to quickly move from one family individual to another, adding stored sources. I especially appreciate the updates on the website, which gives you ways you can more fully utilize this great tool.
This is my favorite genealogy program. After many years of using Family Tree Maker, PAF and other assorted programs, I (finally!)found Legacy. By profession, I test software applications and must say that the design and ease-of-use for Legacy is top-notch. The continually added new features makes you aware that that this company really listens to its customers. I could not live without the ability to link all my scanned images (photographs, obituaries, wills, death certificates, etc.) to groups of individuals via the PhotoCeneter feature. The Event feature and the ability to copy/paste events into multiple individuals (think family groups of census data)saves time and makes for great reports. The GEO Location Database, as mentioned by a previous comment, is a life saver. Its ability to determine that you have entered a location that did not exist at that point in history has saved me valuable research time. My family loves that I can create a report and send it them in a .paf format…and I can do all from within the program. But, by far my favorite thing is the new Suggested Sources in the Research Guidance feature. I have been led to research sources that I had not even considered before. An excellent program!
Started with Generations and liked it, but felt I had to switch when it became clear that this program was not going to be supported or further developed. Changed to Family Tree Maker, and was permanently frustrated at the limitations compared to Generations. I was encouraged to try Legacy by various comments I saw, and haven’t looked back. I particularly like the different views (including the chronology view) that are tabbed across the screen and the immense but intuitive flexibility. Also the support offered, from simple tips to the fact that the developers listen to what the users are saying, actively participating in the user discussions.
I have been using Legacy for about two years. It is the only program that I have used. I purchased it because it seemed more highly rated than the other programs on the market. I have been very happy with it. I am still learning alot about it. I purchased the the 5 Deluxe and upgraded to the 6 Deluxe. The program does a lot more than I am using at the moment. I hope to someday utilize all of its functions.
I have been using Legacy for only a few months, having abandoned an old and now obsolete genealogy program. Legacy impressed me from the start by capturing accurately all my data from the old program. The more I work with it the more I discover its possibilities. Its ability to guide research possibilities is particularly impressive, as that shows that Legacy is more than just another database; it is sensitive to the needs of the amateur researcher.
I have used Legacy Family Tree since 2000 and feel that it exceeds all other programs by at least 500 percent.
I now use Legacy exclusively because it is so stable (unlike TMG, which I previously used). Other reasons why I prefer Legacy: ease of use, excellent Help, the best Family Group Sheet with many options, can simply click a button to add bold and italics to notes, space for Event Description, many tagging options, Research suggestions, frequent updates, ability to eliminate “ibid” when printing sources with reports. Dislikes about Legacy: does not automatically add married name for women, can’t indicate a date for AKA (other names), no on-screen Individual View that shows all information and events about one person, won’t print sources single spaced, unable to show and print a color for every person.
I started using genealogy software with Brother’s Keeper v4 for DOS. I then progressed to FTM for many years until they were not going to supply the upgrade to V11 some outlets here in Canada. That was when I switche to Legacy and I have no regrets. Legacy is far more user friendly and intuitive. The reports are far superior to FTM and the screens are a lot more pleasant and informative. I have only had to contact tech support twice and both times they responded in a very reasonable time with the information I needed. I started with Legacy 5 and am now using Legacy 6 and plan to continue for a long time.
I tried all that were on the market and didn’t like the formats, user friendly tools, pedigree sheets, family group sheets nor the information you could record. Then I found about 5 years Legacy Family Tree. Fell in love immediately. Finally someone that had a clue about genealogy record keeping. I started with the free one and quickly switched to the full program with CD and Book. Have started many “Newbes” to Genealogy and they were also able to use it from the get go! I would NEVER switch. My husbands cousin has all her information on FTM and she sent me a program so I could record the family information she had! I sent it back and just told her to send me a GED Com file by email. She did and I quickly inserted all her information into my Legacy program. She couldn’t believe i could do that that quickly. She my convert yet!
Legacy is a 20 on a scale of 1-10 in my book!
I started with FTM and still do my research on Ancestry.com with that program. But my offical database in on Deluxe Legacy 6. This is the program that all my reports are sent from to others. It is also the program that I use to create a family history for a CD. The first parents had 11 children and I could divide them into chapters with each indexed. The pictures of individuals were printed with that individual and not somewhere else. The Note section has unlimited space. It is a great program other than it does not pick up the female married name to search. This is why I still use FTM.
I have been using Legacy about five years. I love it and do not care for 3 other software genealogy programs that I have used. I especially like the way it handles sources, the Chronology tab to quickly view everything about a person in time order, tagging, index tab, and of course the reports.
I have used Legacy for about 3 years now, after using Generations and trial TMG. I have been and continue to be impressed with Legacy. I ran with the trial version for a good long while and once sought out the help support. The response was quick and they were able to correct my problem. I thought that was excellent service considering I had not purchased the deluxe edition. I purchased the deluxe version last year and love the advanced features as well. I like the tutorials offered on-line and make use of them as well. The only drawback to the program as far as I am concerned is not being able to produce a tree printout in the format I would chose without buying an add-on program. All said, I think it is a quality program and easy to navigate and use. I would and do recommend it to others whenever I get the opportunity.
I am totally enthused by the ease of use and the effective organisation of data on Legacy 6 deluxe. The reports, ease of custonising to personal preferences and family oddities, research suggestions and legacy news are all great features. The only negative is the need to buy an add on to print charts. Heartily recommended after using 2 other genealogy programmes.
I have used the registered versions of Legacy for quite a few years now. I enjoy all the “extra” features that are included in this easy to learn program such as sorting children by year of birth, the tremendous search engine within the program as well. I have over 13 thousand people in the database and with other software finding one particular family was a challenge – not so with Legacy. There are so many places to store your notes, locating source references, displaying pictures or documents and the list goes on. I especially enjoy creating HTML Ancestry web pages that follow a chronological order for others to share and make reference to. This is one professional piece of software that I will not be giving up in the near future.
I’ve tried them all and Legacy is the only one I would use. It was comfortable from the get-go and just gets better. After two years I’m still discovering new things it can do. I look forward to Version 7!
I found Legacy online to compare it with others and I find it nice and straight forward. I enjoy the organized to do list and research suggestions. I’m on a very tight budget and I am enjoying the free download for now. But I hope to buy the full version soon.
I am a teacher of Genealogy and lecturer on Genealogy topics including Genealogy software. I own a copy of the current version of most programs. There are several top notch programs; I will list them in order of the best overall; Legacy, Rootsmagic, TMG, and FTM 2006.
I rate Legacy as the best because of it’s ability to easily handle all of the types of Data a genealogist will encounter. I rate TMG lower because it is very complex ( and the most capable program) It suffers from a lack of cohesive design and a non standard vocabulary which make it very difficult to learn and use.
I recently became interested in genealogy software and tried out rootsmagic first. was fairly impressed but wasn’t convinced enough to pay for the upgrade. i tried TMG for short while and immediately deleated it off my desktop. then came legacy. i have only been using it for 3 weeks but have close to 200 people in my chart and the ease of data entry, well thought out chart formats (especially the family), and overall ease of use has convinced me. I just placed the order to upgrade to the deluxe version. I just hope their customer support is as good as their software. thanks.
I started out using PAF back in the early 1990s and although PAF is a good family tree programme, after a year or so I found it lacking in features I wanted to use. After trying just about every other family tree programme I could lay my hands on I discovered Legacy, actually Legacy version 2 and I have been using the programme ever since.
What first attracted me to it was the uncluttered interface. It was easy to learn and use and I liked the many features it had. Now at version 6 it just keeps getting better without going over the top with features or introducing features that are more gimmick than practical. Having said all that it is by no means a perfect programme, but I can comfortably live with its weaknesses and will continue to use it for as long as I can.
I began using Legacy Family Tree very soon after the original version was launched many years ago. I did so out of frustration caused be several other genealogy programs. Legacy is a VERY powerful program which the team works extremely hard at updating it to keep abreast of the users needs and wish-lists. I find it easy to use, very powerful AND when I run into a question or problem, their helpdesk team do a fantastic job for me.
Hey, the basic version is FREE - give it a try - you might like it !!
Eh! (that’s Canadian for Y’all)
I have used Legacy for anumber of years, and it just keeps getting easier. With the Updates, i can add photos (I’m getting bettet at thsi), and other media. I like the weblink in the home section and the to-do list.
Legacy is the BEST. I particularly like its ease of use and unlimited room for text notes and research. Coupling pictures with the database and having them embedded in pdf documents is a real plus.
I was a solid Family Tree Maker user and only used Legacy when I needed to merge files. Then my cousin installed LEGACY on my computer 7 March 2000 and I have been a dedicated user ever since. In 1998 I suffered a massive stroke that paralyzed most of my left [predominate side] but with the short key strokes, entering data is a real joy and very easy to use one handed or not. The most recent change allows me to keep up with birthdays and anniversaries by checking the home tab every day.
I have used Legacy since starting to put my family tree on computer and have found it to be the most user friendly program. I have looked at others and also received information from other people with different systems and still find Legacy to be the most user friendly program. Thank you for making it so easy to use.
Nice blog. My site is LoRz Technology Solutions
I have used Legacy for over a year now. I was firmly hooked on FTM until I found the free trial for Legacy-WOW! The reports are wonderful, the ability to search multiple sites from within the program far exceeds FTM and the geo-database with county checker makes sure I have the right place to continue my search for records! I have recommended Legacy to many other genealogists and most have switched.
I have used other programs, but much prefer Legacy - I love the easy web page (see URL) creation. I like the way it handles sources, and it’s easy and intuitive to use. It’s not perfect - more charts, and some extra features would be good, but it’s excellent value for money (I’ve the paid up version) and even the free version is feature-laden
After several years of using Brothers keeper, PAF then FTM in its various incarnations, I found Legacy. Ease of use is the term that springs to mind, its intuitive interface allows me to do almost anything. Most of my research is UK based and most genealogy software is US biased. Legacy allows me to configure it to my preferences. The only slightly negative comment I have is the way of adding sources which I personally dont like.
I only started using Legacy last year after several years with FTM. I still use both systems as they both have various benefits for me.
I have over 25,000 names in my database and Legacy has many methods of tagging and searching so that I can easily work with smaller groups of direct ancestors at any time.
However I prefer the charting and internet searching options within FTM.
I have used Legacy for many years, I guess as many years as Legacy’s age. I started using it when a friend was asked to test it for Legacy. I have been using it ever since, and as an internet chat host for genealogy, I recommend it to all my chatters. Many newbies don’t know where to turn when they are just starting to put their information together. So I send them here! It’s easy to use, easy to learn, and has all the bells and whistles that I need! I had previously used FTM and TMG, but I LOVE my Legacy, and those others are not even on my computer. I still keep Rootsmagic, so I can translate my ifnormation to my Polish and Danish family when i send it to them! When you guys start translations, I’ll eliminate that one too!
Thanks!
Jan
I have used Legacy for several years. I finally started a Users Group for Legacy in Portland, Oregon area to help us living in this area to share ideas. I hop that Legacy will make available a program that will allow USB drives, so we can easily update files on laptops and PC’s. I really like the displays that Legacy has!
I’ve tried them all, and am currently very happy with Legacy, having just upgraded to 6.0. I started out using Generations and used it up until it was bought by Genealogy.com. I used TMG for a while, but found it too over the top for me. I never liked FTM, even though I’ve had subscriptions to Ancestry.com and Genealogy.com for many, many years. Legacy has all the features I want, plus I really like the way they display the family unit. I only wish I could print that screen (used to be able to with Generations, which had the same “home page”.) I’m sure I’ll keep using Legacy for many years to come.
When I first became interested in Genealogy, I started with Family Tree Maker. Although it did a fairly admirable job for what I was doing at the time, I became someone disillusioned at what seemed to be constant upgrading - not free, of course! Upon discovering Legacy, I really began enjoying researching. I now use Version 6 Deluxe and couldn’t be happier. Legacy is definitely user-friendly, and I am not charged for every little upgrade that is done. With the Research Guidance feature and the ability to use the IGI search right from the program, Legacy has jumped even higher up the ladder in my estimation. I wouldn’t use anything else! I seem to discover something “new” each time I open Legacy. I have not yet purchased the new User’s Manual, but plan to do so very soon.
I used Family Tree Maker beginning with version 2.0, but never seriously (no sources recorded). I got serious while attending GenTech 2001, where I watched every demo and test drove everything that was available. I walked out with new copies of Legacy Deluxe 3.0 and The Master Genealogist Gold 4.0. After importing our FTM data into both of them and trying to add new events and sources in both programs for several weeks, Legacy won us over for ease of use and straightforward design. The data displays also made more sense to us, and the ability to merge other people’s files intelligently has proven invaluable. Legacy became our production application, and is the one I recommend to all who ask.
I have kept upgrading FTM and TMG as well as Legacy to watch for changes and be able to help other society users - FTM is still predominant. All three of them lack effective source document tracking for our many paper files (and using Clooz requires much duplication of effort but it works), and the image management in all three is not as good as it should be (it is actually pretty fragile in Legacy). If another vendor provides improved document and image management within their product, they could lead me away from Legacy. What I really hope is that Legacy will be the one to provide those features in the near future. For last several versions, it has absolutely had the best combination of essential capabilities with ease of use that is available on the market.
I have used Legacy since verion 4 and like most of the other users listed, I find it very easy to use. I also like the fact the progarm has online upgrades within the version number. The only complaint I have is there is no backward compatability between major version upgrades. If I want to share info with someone who hasn’t upgraded to the latest version it’s virtually impossible.
I have used Legacy since verion 4 and like most of the other users listed, I find it very easy to use. I also like the fact the progarm has online upgrades within the version number. The only two complaints I have is there is no backward compatability between major version upgrades. The second is more of a wish, a corresponding county finding utility for Canada.
I have used other genealogy programs and they are nowhere near as good as Legacy is. The ease of use, how everything links in together, all the extras like timelines, to do lists, the ease of recording souces and events, as well as the clipboard for these entries, the publishing centre, the use of bookmarks, the great word processing capabilities with the research section to keep records of your work, it all adds up to a really good program which makes it a real benefit to anyone doing their family research. And of course there are many many more features in Legacy that would just take to long to list. My only complaint or more of a wish is that they will get more history and country orientated information for Australia and Scotland as it is basicly American, but I am sure that they will eventually do this.
I have been using Legacy since Version 4 and loved it then. I can’t believe it’s gotten better and even easier to use. I love printing reports to pdf files and love the endless possibilities to record notes and research. The newest feature that I’m in love with, “strip html”! If I have copied some bit of text directly from the internet (with proper credit of course) I can click that button and away goes all the formatting codes that clutter up the text. No more hunting and deleting. I love this program.
Like many others I started off with Family Tree Maker. I progressed through several hyped-up version upgrades, which in each case proved to offer very little improvement upon the previous incarnation. I then tried Legacy and was favourably impressed, a week or so later I upgraded to the deluxe version. I now use Version 6, it’s not perfect, but vastly superior to the other FH products I’ve looked at over the years, including PAF, brothers keeper and TMG.
I recently changed to Legacy (from FTM) when I was looking to upgrade. I liked the fact I could try Legacy for free and that upgrades were also available at no cost. I soon purchased the delux version and am most impresssed with the features and particularly the internet search tools available.
This program has it all. Excellent tutorial, great reports and charts, easy to enter information. PDF reports are versatile and make the program worth the cost and effort by the user.
Started with PAF about 1989, went to FTM, which I left as everytime they fixed a bug, ca-ching more dollars. To add insult to injury they have about the worst support I’ve had the misfortune to encounter. Tried Generations, didn’t click with my brain. It was either try TMG or this new fangled program Legacy that had just come out. I contacted both by phone, the contact I had with Legacy convinced me to try it, this was about v. 2 or 3. I have never regretted it. Sourcing makes sense, easy to do, the clipboard, geodatabase, chronology, index, the way it displays the 3 generations of the family make it enjoyable to use. Even more enjoyable is the great personal support. When I first started I made some kind of error, Dave the president personally e-mail me to send him my file & he would see what he could do to help me. I did, he did and never ever a problem since. I still use the outline report in FTM and the lineage chart in PAF. To get picky if there is something to get picky about is not being able to add a date to an AKA.
Have tried 5 other programs - none can match Legacy Deluxe!! And - if you want additional features and can convince the authors - they will modifiy it! Upgrades and free and easy.
I started using Legacy 5.0 for two main reasons - one, it was among the best-rated genealogy-software programs, and two, I could add a seeming unlimited number of names, while other test programs had a limitation of 50 individuals. I find that Legacy is intuitively easy and comprehensive, although for creation of charts you need an add-on program. Legacy 6.0 makes researching easier.
Legacy Family Tree is the most feature rich, easiest to learn and use, and the best at source documentation. I’ve used the others, even have Family Tree Maker’s latest version and honestly don’t use it. Legacy Family Tree is really very simply the best, again because of the limitless features and functions while remaining easy to understand and use, not to mention a great user support forum/email user group that answer’s any and all questions you have about the program or genealogy in general! It’s worth far more than what they charge for it! I couldn’t live without it.
I have been a genealogist for 18 years now. I started with Generations as a software package because of it ease to exchange files with Reunion users. After finding several unknown cousins, I bought FTM to be able to exchange data with them. With all good intensions of keeping my source data accurate, I switched to TMG as I became more advanced. I also started to use Pocket Genealogist to take my data into the field when I traveled. All this time, I used Generations as my base program. I then tried Legacy, liked it and bought the deluxe version. It is my favorite program now. I like the customer service, the program design and usability.
I like using Legacy because it’s so easy to use. There are several ways to do different things and it’s all built on convenience. I’d recommend it to anybody.
Like others, I have tried them all and Legacy is the best all-rounder. Genbox is better for charts and Family Historian is better for diagrams showing relationships and finding text anywhere in the data, so I use these programs too but with the gedcom exported from Legacy.
I’ve used gene programs since the 80’s (Roots III, etc.) and have progressively adopted newer products. And I’ve been a systems manager concerned about ease of use factors, etc. With it’s Version 6 Deluxe, Legacy clearly has today’s best balance. There are many improvements I would like to see, but compared to TMG (which I also own: very complex and unique), FTM, and other programs. In recommending it to others, I would note that it can be used over a wide range of neophyte to expert genealogy.
My daughter was using FTM, found it confusing and downloaded the free Legacy. She said it was much easier so I downloaded it too. Being a “Senior” I appreciated the user friendly software and bought the Deluxe 5 two years ago and now have purchased the Deluxe 6. I’m sure I will stay with Legacy for years to come; however, am still learning all the ins and outs of it.
Did all of you notice that there are few/no negative responses to Legacy? Add my name to the list of happy users for all of the same reasons.
One reason for happy users of Legacy that has not been listed is the users group (mailing list). The people are very helpful and the Legacy staff monitor the list. Usually a person requesting help will have a response withing 15 to 20 minutes from someone on the users group.
Legacy also has training videos that are useful and some of them are free online. Millenium tries to keep everything on their program and web site very user friendly and they are always open to suggestions.
The only problem I have noticed (from the users group) is that to use Version 6 Deluxe (with all the bells and whistles) the user “should” have a newer, computer with XP and lots of available memory. For this reason some users are still taking advantage of Version 5 Deluxe. The staff supports Version 5 and the users group is active with both. In fact, I believe there are still a few users with Version 4 because of the age of their computers and/or operating systems.
Another thing that has not been mentioned is that Legacy is written in several languages. They are always looking for translators and beta testers so if you want to help you can jump into the program with both feet.
The standard version is free. If you have not tried Legacy yet give it a try. Play around with it a few days; import, merge, tag, try different reports, print a few family group sheets. I think you will definitly want to buy the Deluxe version. Now, if that still has not convinced you then sign up for the users group and monitor it for a few days. I doubt there is any other program that offers this much support!
I have used several programs & I love Legacy the most. It is the most user frendly & easy to use every day. I teach genealogy & recommend it to all my students.
I love Legacy. It has made my life easier specially when one has a large file. Adding the sources is so easy and specially when this source repeats over and over again. I had been able to organize all my locations in a flash. It would have taken me years in the old program that I used. It is so easy to insert pictures and to keep track of them. It is an excellent program and I really recommend it. This has been a good investment I’ve done. You got my A+++ Thanks for it and keep it up.
I just wanted to say that I tried a few programs and not this one, however I just wanted to say my peace and why I don’t use genealogy programs. What do I use? I use a website program which gives me all the functionality and versatility I can ask for. I use Trellix available from Globalscape.com OK so here’s why. I could not find a program that allows step parents half brothers, several grandparents and multiple marriages which ALL deserve to be remembered in our genealogy research. Ok that’s all that I wanted to say, multiple marriages, step parents and half relatives and their parents too…….. I also want to be able to show all the ancestors, My great grandmothers relatives and her lines, My other grandmother and her lines not just the male lines and not just the married ones…. We’re not all Catholic anymore and I really hate programs that are so specific such as to be of the Christian order and all….
I switched to Legacy from Family Tree Maker several years ago primarily because of the flexible search options. Legacy is easy to use and very easy to search. It is also easy to customize and configure. I have several other applications that it interfaces with quite well (GenSmarts, GedStar Pro). Their customer service is quick to respond and very helpful.
Be warned if like me you had ” Who do you think you are Family Tree Maker Deluxe Edition” as a Christmas present, installed it, decided I did no longer want to subcribe to Ancestory.co.uk. (Who reads the small print when they buy a present for some one!) Now find I have a READ ONLY family tree. I had put in hours of work and only really getting going.I MIGHT AS WELL PUT IT IN THE BIN! I wonder what the BBC would have to say about this?
I am totally satisfied and very pleased with Legacy! FTW just isn’t in the same class as Legacy. I should know, I used FTW for 6 years. Thank you Legacy!!
I have used Legacy for only a few months, but I really love it. I formerly used Generations by Sierra & was really ticked off when they folded & left me with no support. Have tried several programs, including FTM and AFT. But I have finally settled on Legacy Deluxe. There are so many neat features in Legacy that I recommend buying the tutorial CDs to learn about them. I like the way you can sort the children’s list, merge duplicates in the location list, add & delete sources. I use Census info to document residency (an “Event” in Legacy) over the years, to see where they’ve gone. When doing this, you can click a button after the first person is entered and it will be copied to a clipboard, then the next person in that Census, you just paste the Event from the clipboard with a Click of the mouse! I am still learning about Legacy, but the more I learn, the more I like it!
I started with FTM and became progressively dissatisfied. Then I tried PAF and moved on to Rootsmagic. When a downloaded patch on Rootsmagic blew up my family file, I went to Legacy. So far, I have been delighted. My only nitpicky dislike is the sort of Walt Disney-ish icons. But I can live with them easily.
