Trash is Treasure for Man Who Finds Rare Bible at the Dump

Friday July 28, 2006
A Virginia electrician occasionally finds the time to browse around a bit at the local dump when he's there dropping off garbage. Recently, this browsing paid off royally. Mike Hoskins said he found a rare 188-year-old King James Bible, printed in Pittsburgh in 1818, and took it home. As if that wasn't enough, the Bible once belonged to the family of Isaac Enoch, born on January 25, 1775, and lists his descendants. What a wonderful treasure! Unfortunately, Hoskins plans to sell it for a good price, rather than handing it down to a descendant of the family, but at least the Bible survived thanks to his find!

We may not all be so lucky as to find a family Bible in the garbage, but here are five places where you can dig up your own family treasures.

This Bible should be returned to a family member, not sold. I have a 1886 German Bible that has Stull family listed in it. I was getting nowhere finding family genealogy until I realized in the family register of this German Bible the name was spelled STULL it was STOLL. it opened the doors for me. In that Bible was my 3rd Great Grandmother Baptismal Certificate, newspaper clippings of family members death notices & etc. The amazing thing I had the Bible for 40 years before looking inside it.
