Veterans Data at Risk -- Again
Monday August 7, 2006
Another computer containing personal data of U.S. veterans has gone missing - this time from the security-protected office of a subcontractor hired to assist in insurance collections for VA medical centers in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, PA. The personal data of as many as 38,000 veterans may be at risk - most of it affecting veterans, both living and deceased, who received care at the Pittsburgh and Philadelphia hospitals during the past four years. This comes less than three months after a previous computer theft threatened the privacy of as many as 26.5 million U.S. veterans. The computer in that case was recovered and two teenagers have been charged in the robbery.
