City of Logan Prepares to Unveil Everton Genealogical Collection

Sunday September 24, 2006
It's been more than two years since the city of Logan, UT, acquired the 82,000 piece Everton Collection, one of the largest privately held genealogical collections in the country, but worries over maintenance costs have left the collection languishing for want of a librarian. Logan Library Director Ronald Jenkins finally mananged to convince Logan City Council to finance maintenance of the collection on a trial basis for a year and plans are to open it to the public by early October.

"Everybody is willing to give it a shot," Mayor Randy Watts said to the Associated Press. "The only way we're really going to know how important it is to the citizens is to open it up and give it a year and watch how much activity occurs with the collection."

The unique $1.7 million Everton collection of family histories, family tree charts, manuscripts, books, old maps and county atlases will be overseen by full-time librarian, Jason Cornelius, in a room within the city's Justice Building. Officials are also looking for volunteers to assist with clerical work and help customers find what they're looking for in a vast collection that is just beginning to be organized.
