Icelanders All Related

Friday February 9, 2007
Everyone member of the 300,000 population of Iceland is related, according to genealogy Web site islendingabok.is. One person decided to check it out after a debate with her brother who insisted she was related to her boyfriend. According to the Web site, she is - they share a great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandmother, by the name of Gudrún Einarsdóttir. The site has been online for some time, and is free to anyone who is listed in the database (almost everyone in Iceland or with Icelandic ancestry).

The article goes on to discuss the sport of genealogy in Iceland...

Genealogy can in fact be considered a national sport in Iceland. When people introduce their partners to the elderly members of their family for the first time, they usually ask: “Hverra manna er hann (eða hún)?” which translates to: “Who are his (or her) people?” In the Icelandic sagas each character is introduced by a long listing of his or her ancestors.
...as well as discussing a variety of famous Icelanders, and how they all relate to each other. A fun read!
