Why Participate in Roll Calls?

Monday September 3, 2007
How many genealogy mailing lists do you subscribe to? Do they offer periodic Roll Calls? If so, do you participate? DearMyrtle highlights this very useful genealogy tool in her blog this week, Why Participate in Roll Calls? I subscribe to quite a few surname-specific lists, and I always love Roll Call time because it helps me identify new subscribers who may be researching the same lines. Roll calls in geographic-specific lists can be helpful as well, not only to identify list members researching the same families, but also those who might be researching in the same town or neighborhood. I've connected with several people researching my ancestors' neighbors that way, and we then teamed up to share deeds, land plats, and other records which mention each others ancestors, as neighbors, friends, business associates etc. - records which I may never have found otherwise, as my ancestors were not the focus of the record.
