So began Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's famous poem, "Paul Revere's Ride," documenting the bravery of a man riding into the Massachusetts night of April 18, 1775 to warn his fellow American colonists that British soldiers were on the march. While immortalized by the pen of Longfellow, Revere was actually just one of thousands of American patriots who played an important part in achieving independence from the British.
