Writing Your Personal Family History

By April 26, 2008

Writing a personal history is a daunting task for many of us. Where do I start? What things should I include? What's so interesting about my life anyway?

Your personal history, however, is a very important part of your family history, and no one will be able to tell your story better than you. You can start off small, by keeping a personal journal or starting a blog. Or, you can capture your entire personal history by working through the questions in this great tutorial for writing your personal family history from About LDS. If you really can't face writing about yourself, then a family newsletter may offer an interesting alternative. It's a fun way to capture some of your family's personal history for future generations.

I started adding notes to my own family file record about 3-4 months ago. As I slowly remember things I’ve done (the ones I WANT to remember), I add a note. Even something as mundane as moving to a new apartment. So, this is my journal, so to speak. I’ve also got accounts with myspace and facebook, where I make additions, such as a recent funeral I attended. At first it was strange, writing about me for a change. Still, I would like someone to know some of the weird and strange things that happened in my life.

By the way, you’re probably getting sick of me posting a lot, but like I said, I love your site, and the variety of information you provide. Again…good hunting.

In addition to starting a genealogy blog to write the stories of my ancestors, I started one full of journal prompts to help others like myself write down our own personal stories and the stories of close family members. You can access this blog at http://ancestories2.blogspot.com

I’ve posted an article on “What Makes a Good Biography or Autobiography” and there are other resources on my blog about how to get started doing your family history.
There is also a terrific resource in the Association of Personal Historians with online resources on how to get started with your own history as well as local and regional groups. You can also find a personal historian on the site that can help you or do it for you. Whatever you choose, there’s a lot of support out there! You just have to get started.
