Entire U.S. Census to be Added to Footnote

Thursday October 29, 2009

Footnote announced today that it will digitize and place online all publicly available U.S. Federal Censuses from 1790 to the most current public census from 1930. The 1860 and 1930 censuses are already online, with digitization of 1900, 1910 and 1920 just getting underway.

So why use the census on Footnote when it is available elsewhere on the Web? Footnote does do it a little differently - offering interactive census pages for each individual which allow users to add comments and insight about that person, upload and attach scanned photos and documents, and identify relatives found in the census by clicking the I'm Related button. Check out the 1930 interactive census page for Jimmy Stewart to see available features.

Footnote also offers an alternative to other subscription genealogy sites, such as Ancestry.com, which offer the complete U.S. census. The census records also make a very nice addition for people subscribing to Footnote for the many other records they offer. Of course, FamilySearch Record Search offers many U.S. Federal Census online for free (along with census records for many states and other countries). They currently have indexes and images for 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1900, plus indexes only for 1880 and 1920.

Check out the latest interactive census additions at Footnote, and sign up to receive an email when images are added for your chosen states.

Thank you Kimberly for all your hard work. Have you found anything on finding African American relatives when they are mixed. My father’s father on the 1910 Census says they are Mulatto, but my father is listed as Black or colored, cannot recall the term right. I am looking for my grandfather’s people, but have no first names. He would be white and from NC. But I am going to try using Nobel instead of Noble and see. I appreciate any help re: mulatto

I have ancestors on my maternal grandfather’s side listed in the census every year from 1850 (free) to 1930 except 1890. In different years the very same person(s) might be listed as mulatto, black, or negro. I think it depends on the census worker who took the census that year. If they saw the family member[S] was light or very light they went on and put mulatto , where some workers just listed everyone as either Black or Negro regardless of complextion. We know some of our “African American” ancestors had a white parent but rarely was that person listed as a parent in the 1800s or early 1900s.

Robert, you are so right. I have found it almost amusing. As you said, the same family, listed differently at various times!
There are definitions for various amounts of black blood, but they are seldom used and for some reason many people find them offensive.

Keep up the good work.
