Give Back at FamilySearch Indexing

By March 22, 2011

Follow me on:

It's easy! I promise. If you enjoy the steady stream of free records added weekly to FamilySearch.org (over 11.5 million International records and 2 million U.S. records were added just last week), please consider "giving back" by contributing a little time online as a FamilySearch Indexing volunteer. You can do as little or as much as you would like - at any time of the day or night (and yes, while in your comfy pajamas!).

Once you have the software downloaded and are all ready to go, you can select from any of the dozens of available projects being indexed at any given time. Just select a project that interests you - from French vital records to U.S. census records to Hungarian church records. More records are available as partner projects as well. Any volunteers who are not currently associated with a particular indexing group or stake are welcome to join any of the genealogical society partner projects - you don't generally have to be a member of the society. If you really don't have a preference (or have Pennsylvania ancestors), I'll put in a little plug here for the newly launched Pittsburgh Deaths 1870-1905 project currently available in FamilySearch Indexing as a partner project with the Western Pennsylvania Genealogical Society (we welcome any and all volunteers!).

Think you might be interested in participating? See Getting Started with FamilySearch Indexing for a look at what it's all about. Just remember. While you are volunteering your time to index someone else's ancestors, they may just be indexing yours!

Wow. I’ve not done any indexing since January, but this will get me off of my butt.

Heading over to the indexing site NOW. :)
