Lady Liberty Will Shine Again

Tuesday March 30, 2004
After being closed for over two years due to security concerns following the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001, the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor is set to reopen this summer according to U.S. National Park officials.

Although no official reopening date has been set, officials at the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation said they have raised $5.9 million of the $7 million needed to tighten security, upgrade the statue's fire systems, emergency exits and other features.

Located on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, the Statue of Liberty was a gift of international friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States, and stands as a universal symbol of political freedom and universal goodwill to all who visit America's shores. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886 and extensively restored in time for her centennial on July 4, 1986.
