British War Records Go Online

Monday August 16, 2004
Beginning this week, genealogists and other interested individuals are now able to view online the scanned images of original death records (indexes) of more than a million British soldiers killed in conflicts from the Boer War to the Korean War.

The records, provided by Britain's General Register Office (GRO), are part of a database which includes several million documents gathered by officials while overseas. Other records included in this database include indexes for a variety of military births and marriages, as well as other births recorded overseas (i.e. for British citizens not in Britain).

The database is one of several available at the pay-per-view genealogy subscription site, 1837online.com. This is a site I have used personally to search one of their other databases, the civil registration records of England and Wales. It is a great site if you know what you're looking for, but since you essentially have to browse by surname, rather than search, you can end up spending a lot of money if you have a common surname (like Powell) and don't have a specific idea of the names and dates for which you are hunting.
