Ancestry of Pope John Paul II

Friday April 1, 2005
It's hard sometimes to think of a Pope as having a family, but before he became the first Polish Pope in history and the first non-Italian Pope since the sixteenth centery, Karol Jozef Wojtyla (voy TIH wah) was known to his friends in Wadowice, Poland as "Lolek." And yes, he did have a family - but tragically his mother, father and siblings had all died by the time Pope John Paul II reached his 22nd birthday. Sadly, they never saw him ordained to the priesthood, much less as the spiritual leader of Catholics around the world.
