Your Mate According to Vegas

Monday February 12, 2007
Ancestry's new advertising direction -- intended to capture the attention of the casually interested non-genealogist -- has taken quite a twist with its latest campaign. VegasWeddingOdds.com uses publicly available Nevada marriage and divorce records to determine your odds of a match made in heaven with your sweetheart. Considering my husband's name, I figured it would have a hard time and I was right - no Kimberly has married an Albrecht during the past 50 years in Las Vegas ("leave it to you to find a match unprecedented in Nevada history"), although Ancestry did invite me to be the first.

My first impression when I ran across the site was that it was a bit corny for a "serious" genealogy site. But my husband, who found it "cute," reminded me that genealogy is supposed to be fun. And if a site like this gets more people interested in their family history, then bravo!

The fine print was my favorite part...

*No psychics, counselors or members of your family were consulted in the creation of this site. Odds are based solely on Nevada marriage and divorce data from publicly available records in various Nevada county and state archives. Food for thought: If you’re unsure enough about a potential spouse to let a web site inform your decisions, we recommend you think twice. Ancestry.com accepts no responsibility for the success or failure of your marriage in Las Vegas. But in the case that you do live happily ever after, we’ll be happy to take full credit.
