Keeping Up with Changes to Family Tree Maker 2008

Monday October 15, 2007
Family Tree Maker 2008, released in August, has been a big disappointment to many long time users of the popular genealogy software program (see user comments here and here). While I (and many others) feel that some of this response should have come well before the program was publicly released, The Generations Network (TNG) now appears to be dedicated to fixing known bugs, and addressing many user complaints and requests. They openly admit that they are going in a new direction with this latest version, and all requested changes may not make it into this or later versions of the software, but many issues - such as program speed, and the lack of many basic reports and charts and stand-alone book publishing are being addressed in an update due out later this month or in future updates to come. To learn more about the issues being (and not being) addressed, check out the Family Tree Maker Update on the official Ancestry Blog. The company is also offering a free Family Tree Maker Webinar on October 25th in "an effort to increase communication between the Family Tree Maker team and our customers."

I have been a FTM user for many, many years and I am very disappointed in the FTM2008. I cannot sort the children when they are out of place and the worst of all is that I cannot print out a genealogy report like the other versions. I hope something can be done to rectify these two problems or I may soon change from FTM to something else.

Im still working with version 11 of FTM but with a drive crash and lost disks I am looking to upgrade. So I go with version 16, FTM 2008 or the Whollygenes product? FTM 2008 SEEMS to be trying to compete with The Master Genealogist. Is anyone else seeing this too? If everyone hates 2008 should I stick with version 16? Is that the last “normal” version?
