Budweiser "Discover Your History" Contest

Monday February 4, 2008
Budweiser Family Tree to Africa Sweepstakes. Photo: Anheuser-BuschIn celebration of February as Black History, Anheuser-Busch and its flagship brand Budweiser is sponsoring a contest to help one person win the chance of a lifetime: to discover their family’s origins and travel to that destination to retrace their family’s history.

The grand prize in the "Discover Your History" sweepstakes includes a trip for the winner and three guests to explore their ancestral background as determined via genetic testing. The journey includes round-trip air transportation and two double-occupancy hotel rooms for up to nine nights and a completed family tree. The Grand Prize winner will be responsible for some expenses. Nine First Prizes also will be awarded and consist of genetic genealogy testing and ancestral family tree research. Official sweepstakes rules, instructions and an online registration form can be obtained at www.budweiser.com. To locate it, click on “Bud Channels” near the bottom left, and then on “On The House.” From there, you can click on the changing banner in the middle of the page. While the sweepstakes is being held in celebration of Black History Month, it is open to all residents of the United States (except California) who are 21 years of age or older.

In addition, Budweiser is partnering with nationally syndicated radio host Michael Baisden to offer an additional 20 genetic genealogy tests and family tree compilations. Listeners can call in live during the "Michael Baisden Show," a popular afternoon talk and music program, to answer questions pertaining to blackhistory. Winners will be selected from those listeners who provide correct answers.

The genetic testing will be done by AfricanDNA.com LLC, a company founded by Harvard University Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. No information was provided on who will be conducting the family tree research.

So am I to understand that since this contest is in honor of black history month, that only blacks are eligible to enter the contest? That’s unfair isn’t it?

Well just like the 40 Acres and a mule, this contest is nowhere to be found. If you want to talk about fairness, then this is the wrong platform. Thousands of African Americans feel as though part of them is missing and largely that is due to a shaky, mysterious history. I want my children to be able to know where their ancestors come from and be proud, without having to spend my life digging through slave and census records. Growing up, I remember when we discussed genealogy in class, my non-African American peers had answers such as: “I am 50% Italian, 25% Irish, and 25% Welsch” or “My family comes from Venezuela” The only answer I could say was “I am American, my ancestors come from Africa, however I don’t know where, but I was born here.” Take that for fair!

Yes, February is African American Heritage Month but the sweepstakes is not only for African Americans. Budweiser is one of the sponsor of African American Lives 2. Please read the sweepstakes before making assumptions.
