Cowkeepers to Woolstaplers - Historic English Trade Directories Online

Thursday June 19, 2008
FamilyRelatives.com announced the addition of a neat new record set this week which peaked my interest - Pigot's Trade Directories. These historical occupational directories list individuals along with their profession or trade. The online collection, available only to subscribers, currently covers 27 counties in the 1830 - 1839 time period - perfect for researching ancestors prior to the 1841 census.

Unfortunately the 27 counties currently available do not include my primary research counties of Gloucestershire and Somersetshire (I'm still looking for my husband's long ago undertaker ancestor), but the records which are available are very nice. They can be searched by name or occupation, or browsed by page. Some of the directories that are included in this collection can already be found online (try a Google search for "pigot's directory"), as can some of the ones that aren't yet included such as the 1830 Pigot Trade Directory for Bristol (which doesn't list the undertaker I'm looking for) on GENUKI.
