Ì Learn About Research in Specific Localities

If you are new to genealogy or just new to research in a specific locality, you will find an abundance of tutorials, guides and helpful articles online. When a new question pops up during your research, visit some of the following sites to look for possible answers and new ideas on how to pursue new topics:

Ì Locating Records

Where can you find birth, marriage or death records? Where can you access census or probate records? Some records can be ordered from records offices and archives, while others can be found through your local LDS Family History Center. Following are online resources that will help you find what you need both online and offline:

Ì Meeting Other Researchers

The Internet is a natural meeting place. Cousins and researchers with similar interests and experience meet one another each day. Success is found by researchers through e-mail mailing lists, chat rooms and web sites with message boards and surname queries. And the best news is that most of these resources are free to use.

Ì Reference Material

Much of the time spent in genealogical research is devoted to learning the history of the area in which your ancestors lived. The Internet is loaded with helpful reference material including maps, gazetteers, locality histories, timelines, genealogical dictionaries, language translation tools and more.

Participating and Sharing

The genealogical community has always been sharing and giving. Genealogists have always helped one another through open sharing and participation in volunteer projects, and in genealogical and historical societies. The Internet has made the world a much smaller place. It is much easier to find a society of interest, to join the society and to participate in projects sponsored by the society, no matter where you live nor how far away the society is located. Volunteer projects and personal home pages with help offered to others abound.
