“Synopsis of ‘The Virginia State Court System, 1776–[The Present],’ A Preliminary Survey of the Superior Courts of the Commonwealth with Notes concerning the present location of the original Court Records and Published Decisions.” (Virginia State Library, 1969) published as an appendix to Ray, Suzanne Smith, Lyndon H. Hart III and J. Christian Kolbe. A Preliminary Guide to Pre-1904 Records in the Virginia State Library and Archives. Richmond, Virginia State Library and Archives, 1994. This guide to county records and the companion guide to municipal records are the basic guides to records at the local level.

Doran, Michael F. Atlas of County Boundary Changes in Virginia, 1634–1895. Athens, Ga.: Iberian Publishing Company, 1987. [The boundary alteration for King George and Stafford is incorrectly portrayed. The original boundary split the two counties lengthwise.] This and the chart “Formation of Virginia Counties from 1634, ” (Athens, Ga.: Iberian Publishing Company) give a snapshot of county boundary changes. A more thorough discussion can be found in

Morgan P. Robinson, Virginia Counties: Those Resulting from Virginia Legislation. [originally published as Bulletin of the Virginia State Library, volume 9 (1916)] Reprint, Baltimore, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1992.

Alcock, John P. Fauquier County, Virginia, Records: Fauquier Families 1759–1799. Athens, Ga.: Iberian Publishing Company, 1994. The introduction (19 pages) discussions various county records and the laws governing their creation.

Phillips, John T. II, The Historian’s Guide to Loudoun County, Virginia, Volume 1: Colonial Laws of Virginia and County Court Orders, 1757–1766. Leesburg, Va.: Goose Creek Productions, 1996. Provides extensive discussion of various aspects of county and state government. The author references both the law, utilizing the extant records of the colonial government, and the practice, through the study of the court orders of Loudoun County.
