This guide to county records and the companion guide to municipal records are the basic guides to records at the local level.
Doran, Michael F. Atlas of County Boundary Changes in Virginia, 16341895. Athens, Ga.: Iberian Publishing Company, 1987. [The boundary alteration for King George and Stafford is incorrectly portrayed. The original boundary split the two counties lengthwise.] This and the chart Formation of Virginia Counties from 1634, (Athens, Ga.: Iberian Publishing Company) give a snapshot of county boundary changes. Phillips, John T. II, The Historians Guide to Loudoun County, Virginia, Volume 1: Colonial Laws of Virginia and County Court Orders, 17571766. Leesburg, Va.: Goose Creek Productions, 1996. Provides extensive discussion of various aspects of county and state government. The author references both the law, utilizing the extant records of the colonial government, and the practice, through the study of the court orders of Loudoun County.
