Schreiner-Yantis, Netti. The 1787 Census of Virginia. Springfield, Va.: Genealogical Books-in-Print, 1987. [Separate county booklets are available.] These are actually county personal property tax lists which list all white males twenty-one or older.

Heads of Families at the First Census of the U.S. Taken in the Year 1790 Virginia. 1908. Reprint Athens, Ga.: Iberian Publishing Co., 1991. These are surviving state tax lists. The federal lists did not survive.

Fothergill, Augusta B. and John Mark Naugle. Virginia Tax Payers 1782–1787 Other Than those Published by the United States Census Bureau. n.p., n.p., 1940. These lists were taken from county personal property tax lists.

Dorman, John Frederick. The Virginia Genealogist. Serial publication of the Virginia personal property tax lists for 1800. Begins in Volume 1 with Accomack and currently is publishing Mecklenburg in Vol. 37 (1996).

[1810 personal property tax lists for Cabell, Greenbrier, Grayson, Halifax, Hardy, Henry, James City, King William, Lee, Louisa, Mecklenburg, Middlesex, Nansemond, Northampton, Patrick, Pittsylvania, Orange, Russell, Tazewell].

The census records for 1820–1880, 1900–1920 survive and various indexes both in print and on CD are available for the years 1820–1870.
