About Cherri:
Cherri Melton Flinn is an Illinois-based freelance writer and instructor.  Fascinated by genealogy since childhood, she began pursuing her interest several years ago on the Internet, only to be frustrated by seeing the many possibilities, yet finding little in the way of guidance on how to use what was available.  As she puts it, "Finding the family history Web sites is easy; finding your family history is another story."  Her husband gave her search a big boost when he gave her a family tree software package for her birthday.  Soon she was helping other people in her hometown of 11,000, as family and friends began calling on her for advice as they attempted to build their own family trees.  Cherri began teaching a class on genealogy on the Internet at a local community college, and the class filled the first time it was offered.  Given the high level of interest and the lack of adequate instruction materials, she decided to write this book.  She has since been recruited to offer workshops on the topic at another local college near her home.

Genealogy Basics Online:
This book is an excellent resource for the beginner researching family history. More than just a list of helpful Web sites, this book provides tips for how to manage a structured search for family surnames and documents such as birth, death and marriage certificates. It also provides a basic introduction to such necessary tasks as downloading files and using web browsers and search engines effectively, for those genealogists who are feeling a little lost on the Internet.  The appendixes include such useful information as a list of common genealogy terms, relationship abbreviations, a list of outdated occupations often found in genealogy research, and a list of historical epidemics of the last 350 years.  Genealogy Basics Online can show anyone how to begin using the vast resources of the World Wide Web to facilitate genealogical research.
