DearMYRTLE If you are planning to do any genealogy research, you will eventually find that many of the resources you need are available through the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah and its 3,500+ branches called Family History Centers (FHC), located through the world.
Patricia me
DearMYRTLE Now that they've got the FamilySearch web site:
Sher me too
DearMYRTLE www.familysearch.org people tend to write to me and say "well, they got the records online." While its true there are several databases (IGI, Ancestral File & Pedigree Resource File)
DearMYRTLE (got ya on the list SHER!)
DearMYRTLE :)
DearMYRTLE BUT THERE IS STILL so very much NOT online....
DearMYRTLE and I'd like to mention some IMPORTANT things to do ONLINE and OFFLINE
DearMYRTLE so settle back in your EASY CHAIRs.....
DearMYRTLE sip that Coke or hot chocolate....
DearMYRTLE Kim, can you pass around that tray of my grandmother's
DearMYRTLE special recipe for CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES.....
DearMYRTLE and UNK, we need an extra log on the fire.....
Michael2 mmmmm
April mmmmm
DearMYRTLE LET'S TALK GENEALOGY!
DearMYRTLE :)
genealogyADM My pleasure Myrt!
DearMYRTLE 99 & 44/100ths of what's valuable at the Family History Library (FHL) in Salt Lake City is still available only on microfilm & microfiche.
UnkHiram carrying wood
BeccaRose <happy dance>
DearMYRTLE The FHL has microfilm copies of courthouse and vital records from all
rikki .*reaching ahead of everyone*
DearMYRTLE over the world. Learning to use local centers can prove to educate you in the types of records available and how to obtain them to continue your research.
rikki .*munch* *munch* *munch* *gulp*
DearMYRTLE I see we're going to have to save the cookies from rikki!
DearMYRTLE ::::giggle:::::
rikki LOL
tiny save some for the rest of us
DearMYRTLE You can take a picture tour of the Huntsville Alabama LDS Family History Center by going to its WEB page
DearMYRTLE The webmaster and director of the center is also FATerry@aol.com. She manages the American Online Genealogy Forum Message Center and has written the excellent AOL Genealogy Forum Guidelines.
DearMYRTLE (AOL Keyword: roots)
DearMYRTLE Terry also often attends the Family History Center Drop-In hour on Tuesdays at 11am eastern in the Ancestral Digs meeting room of AOL Genealogy Forum. Keyword: roots.
DearMYRTLE Here's a FHC Research Checklist prepared with the expert advice of my good friend Elsie Naylor. This is given to each new patron at the Brandon Stake Family History Center to make them aware of the various collections.
DearMYRTLE I've modified it A LOT since the advent of the
DearMYRTLE www.familysearch.org web site.....
DearMYRTLE EACH SURNAME should be searched faithfully through each of these collections in order.
DearMYRTLE you will exhaust the www.familysearch.org
DearMYRTLE web site FIRST, then
DearMYRTLE Although you may not know where to find each of these collections at your particular FHC, be sure to ask the volunteer for information including how to use each item on this listing.
DearMYRTLE FHC = local FAMILY HISTORY CENTER.... ok?
DearMYRTLE ANYONE NOT know where their local center is?
DearMYRTLE How to locate your local LDS FHC: Roots - L has a page with links
UnkHiram me (Shamefully admitting)
DearMYRTLE to addresses of the larger LDS Family History Centers throughout the world, check with the FamilySEARCH Web site
DearMYRTLE REMEMBER, whether searching online or offline....
DearMYRTLE Using a LDS Family History Center
rikki .* Large gasp of air* You Unk?? I never would have thought it!
DearMYRTLE 1. Gather all vital records, bible records, old documents & photos.
DearMYRTLE 2. Organize data on family group sheets & pedigree charts.
DearMYRTLE 3. Decide what you want to learn about your ancestors.
DearMYRTLE 4. Select the record to search.
DearMYRTLE 5. Obtain & search the record.
DearMYRTLE FIRST ELIMINATE PREVIOUSLY COMPILED RESEARCH....
DearMYRTLE There is no point in reinventing the wheel! Check previously submitted research first. You'll want to find any references to your ancestors already in print or on computer databases.
marmfin Dear Myrtle, How did you get to be so smart?
DearMYRTLE Do as MUCH online as possible, then look at original documents on microfilm.
DearMYRTLE Check each of these sources at LDS Family History Centers, avoiding duplication of effort.
DearMYRTLE A DUMP TRUCK HIT ME, MARMFIN.... and I had no CHOICE but to learn computers.....
rikki Hiya jackie!!
BeccaRose hey Jackie!
DearMYRTLE FAMILYSEARCH(tm) COMPUTER DATABASES
rikki Myrt....ouchie
DearMYRTLE www.familysearch.org
DearMYRTLE Be sure to obtain research outlines on each FamilySearch (tm) database for more details than are shown on this computer databases overview in paper format at your local FHC
jackieb Hey folks-whats up?
DearMYRTLE ANCESTRAL FILE pedigree linked data. Save to disk or print out from an FHC computer, but also accessible at the web site:
marmfin Well, you wouldn't lie!
DearMYRTLE MOST IMPORTANT////////////
DearMYRTLE In any case, be sure to obtain a copy of the submitter's list for each entry & write for more details.
DearMYRTLE --------------------------------
DearMYRTLE IGI International Genealogical Index individual event, searchable online at:
DearMYRTLE www.familysearch.org
DearMYRTLE QUESTION FOR EVERYONE...............
DearMYRTLE HAVE you had MUCH LUCK with Ancestral File or the IGI?
tiny no
cam no
rikki no
BeccaRose moderate luck yes
April no listings found
edna not me
DearMYRTLE the CD-ROM and Fiche versions are too slow, so I prefer the online versions!
Kaymiami yes
Bck Yes, but found mistakes there too
genealogyADM Myrt - I use them for clues on occasion, but that's about it...
DearMYRTLE good point, Kimberly!
DearMYRTLE Were any of you able to CONTACT THE SUBMITTER to get back-up
UnkHiram some, but it has to be double checked
DearMYRTLE or rather SOURCE DOCUMENTATION?
Kaymiami I find mistakes, but I also find a lot of entries two or three times and it matches when I find an original record
DearMYRTLE <nodding>
BeccaRose am waiting for replies now
DearMYRTLE So as you can see these files are NOT PERFECT..... but might provide some CLUES
DearMYRTLE ONE DATABASE that is ONLINE is the newly created:
DearMYRTLE PEDIGREE RESOURCE FILE PRF (only online or in CD-ROM format. Not all FHCs have upgraded their computers to view the PRF in Windows format.
Michael2 is there anything that is perfect
rikki I sent a letter out to one but no reply. It was the only one I found and they weren't in the line I'm really researhing.
UnkHiram My wife
DearMYRTLE BEsides, its quicker to view them online at home, in the convenience of our homes!
marmfin I just discovered Drumquin, County Tyrone and lots of matches!
genealogyADM LOL Unk!
BeccaRose :) Unk
DearMYRTLE UNK... the blonde sure is perfect.... you do love her!
DearMYRTLE ANYWAY back to our topic!
DearMYRTLE :)
DearMYRTLE Get those cookies from RIKKI!
UnkHiram Shutting up and trying to behave
BeccaRose lol
DearMYRTLE I need one for extra strength!
DearMYRTLE :)
DearMYRTLE heheheee....
rikki *.munching faster*
DearMYRTLE the web site explains the PEDIGREE RESOURCE FILE:
tiny behave
DearMYRTLE "The Pedigree Resource File is a growing database of lineage-linked names submitted by users of the FamilySearch™ Internet Genealogy Service. Pedigree Resource Files will become a reservoir of names to help individuals identify and link to their ancestors. Users can draw from this database for help with their family history research or for submissions to Ancestral File. "
DearMYRTLE This is another form of a previously compiled genealogy....
DearMYRTLE and I make them second cousin to those GENEALOGY BOOKS down at your local library.
DearMYRTLE A genealogy book is only as good as its SOURCE DOCUMENTATION
DearMYRTLE and the same goes for WEB PAGES, and COMPUTER GENEALOGY DATABASES/
DearMYRTLE PERIOD.
DearMYRTLE That would be nuff said..... right there!
DearMYRTLE but I DO have some more comments..... and then I'd like to tackle some of your questions???/
DearMYRTLE OK?>?????
tiny OK!!!
BeccaRose lead on
rikki hok
Kaymiami sure
DearMYRTLE OK. this next part is VERY IMPORTANT
DearMYRTLE if you want to move beyond those MYTHOLOGICAL
DearMYRTLE database entries
DearMYRTLE (those that have no source documentation!)
DearMYRTLE FHLC Family History Library Catalog Surname, Locality & Microfilm/Microfiche Number Searches. Best to view this online at:
DearMYRTLE you know how EVERY LIBRARY has a catalog
DearMYRTLE of its holdings?
DearMYRTLE The FHLC
DearMYRTLE is available on fiche & CD (SLOW working through these versions)
DearMYRTLE AND
DearMYRTLE its available online.
Deb what address is FHLC?:
DearMYRTLE You should be LIVING there
DearMYRTLE www.familysearch.org
BeccaRose every day
DearMYRTLE then click on the FAMILY HISTORY LIBRARY
DearMYRTLE and you'll find the CATALOG.
DearMYRTLE you can look up ALL YOUR SURNAMES
Deb is there a charge
DearMYRTLE to find references in the catalog
DearMYRTLE to those names....
DearMYRTLE not to view the catalog.... but let me get going further
rikki .*CRASH* *tinkle* *tinkle* *tinkle*
rikki .*blush*
DearMYRTLE the familysearch web site IS NO FEE.
rikki sorry
rikki :)
DearMYRTLE rikki just dropped my gradnmother's cut glass service tray......
DearMYRTLE :)
rikki LOL
Michael2 it is not funnny, rikki
DearMYRTLE nope, it was just the fake plastic one from Wal-Mart.....
rikki I got Glue Myrt....don't worry!
DearMYRTLE THANKS hon!
DearMYRTLE OK.....
DearMYRTLE MORE IMPORTANT THINGS ABOUT THE CATALOG....
DearMYRTLE QUESTION
DearMYRTLE Have any of you ORDERED a microfilm or microfiche
DearMYRTLE through your local FHC?
Kaymiami yes
Michael2 yes
penbay yes

DearMYRTLE probate records 1789 Lincoln County, Kentucky.
DearMYRTLE GREAT responses......
DearMYRTLE the rest of the folks in the room
jackieb I'm getting ready to make 1st order.
DearMYRTLE will get the main idea..... that you can order all
Sher marriage records
DearMYRTLE sorts of info Church records etc....
genealogyADM Great jackie!
DearMYRTLE ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS
cam I'm learning and taking notes
DearMYRTLE oops on my spelling.
edna me too cam
DearMYRTLE ON MICROFILM....
genealogyADM cam - I'm also saving a transcript of this chat
DearMYRTLE does anyone know how the Famiyl History Library GOT that huge microfilm collection?
genealogyADM So you can all check my site tomorrow and put down your pencils <grin>
jackieb No
UnkHiram VOLUNTEERS
edna oh good Kim - glad to hear that
Joyce2005 yes
tiny good
DearMYRTLE (its grows by thousands of new films/books/maps & fiche each month!)
Joyce2005 volunteers
tiny church members?
DearMYRTLE one of several methods involves volunteers who go and actually microfilm the records
DearMYRTLE say in that distant Parish rectory
Deb wow
DearMYRTLE this is a method of preservation
cam they haven't done any thing in Czech
DearMYRTLE which came into popularity around 1947.....
DearMYRTLE clear back in the last century!
DearMYRTLE :::giggle:::::
DearMYRTLE seriously now..... these microfilming crews
DearMYRTLE turn each page of a church record book
DearMYRTLE and take a picture, and proceed.... until the records are done.
DearMYRTLE A SECOND method of obtaining microfilm
DearMYRTLE is to actually purchase a copy from those entities
DearMYRTLE such as the National Archives
DearMYRTLE that have their own microfilming projects going on.
genealogyADM Actually Cam, they do have records microfilmed for Czechoslovakia
DearMYRTLE in any event.....
DearMYRTLE WHAT LOCALITIES were you researching
DearMYRTLE (those of you that
DearMYRTLE ordered the microfilm?)
edna hi Dee
April Canada
penbay US and Ireland
Kaymiami Lancaster, England
Michael2 Indiana
DearMYRTLE <----------------Germany, Lincolnshire, Eng; Pennsylvania, KY
edna England and Scotland
Deb i have a unknown Canada
Shatys mostly southern US
genealogyADM NC, SC, France, Poland, Germany, England...
Kaymiami Southern Illinois
UnkHiram England
DearMYRTLE and these are DISTANT from where you live, I can well imagine.
EagleMCW Ireland Germany US
DearMYRTLE You can save RESEARCH DOLLARS by ordering in the court probate records ON MICROFILM
DearMYRTLE through your local FHC Center.
UnkHiram Everything is distant from Texas
DearMYRTLE and you can SAVE TIME by deciding WHICH records to order
DearMYRTLE by visiting
DearMYRTLE www.familysearch.org
Kaymiami I need a birth in Tennessee in 1780 and I don't know the county, lots of work ahead
DearMYRTLE online, and using the CARD CATALOG.
BeccaRose glad you could make it Dee
DearMYRTLE IOH..... I STILL tend to call it a CARD CATALOG.
DearMYRTLE old habits die hard.
Dee I research only in Scotland.
DearMYRTLE I mentioned looking up
DearMYRTLE your SURNAMEs
DearMYRTLE SURNAMES are listed in the catalog
Deb can you get local histories for tales about these people there?
rikki Canada......Canada.....Canada.....and Canada. Not sure where else yet :)
Dee Anyone researching in Scotland besides me?
DearMYRTLE when a book... written about the SMITHS might also have some top ten or so surnames.....
edna Yes Dee, I am
DearMYRTLE so the book is listed under many more than the one title "THE SMITH FAMILY OF KENNIWICK, WASHINGTON)
Dee There you are Edna! I didn't see your name on the list.
DearMYRTLE SCOTLAND has some records already in the local US and Canada FHCs......
DearMYRTLE let me pull up that info
Joyce2005 smith is very hard to research! too common a name!
DearMYRTLE LOCALITIES (PLACES its called online at familysearch.org)
Michael2 kinda like davis
DearMYRTLE are where I spednd 90% of my catalog time online.
April only slightly worse than clark
Jules try being a Smith/Jones
edna you searching Clark April?
DearMYRTLE Print out the FILM NOTES for the book or record you wish to order, and visit your local FHC to order the film in for a few dollars.
DearMYRTLE when viewing the FHLCatalog online.
April yes
penbay 8
DearMYRTLE BUT there ARE some databases to look at ONLY at the FHCs....
Deb I was told my gr grandfather was a race horse thief and born in Henderson KY could I find out if this was true
DearMYRTLE Scotland CD-ROMs Scottish Church Records version 9/95 is similar to the OPR Microfiche except that it will search the entire country, whereas the microfiche version is divided by counties. Save to disk or print out indexed christening and marriage records, with references to microfilm of original document, which you can obtain for further proof.
DearMYRTLE OPR=Old Parochial Records
DearMYRTLE Have you Scottish researchers had a chance to look at those?
DearMYRTLE Only available at local FHCs, not online.
edna no not yet
DearMYRTLE MDI Military Death Index for Korean War & Viet Nam Conflict (including Laos & Cambodia.) States branch of service and date of death, etc. Save to disk or print out --ONLY on the FHC computers, not online yet.
DearMYRTLE PAF Personal Ancestral File organizes what you've found in this popular genealogy management program. Try before deciding to buy it for your home computer. Ask about local PAF Users Groups for assistance. Downloadable for FREE from:
DearMYRTLE www,familysearch.org
DearMYRTLE SSDI Social Security Death Index search by SURNAME at time of death, and write to the SSAdministration with the SS# for copy of the original application for the number (not benefits.) This provides positive proof of birth and parentage. Save to disk or print out. Addresses for state vital records & costs for copies are also included.
DearMYRTLE This is best found online at www.rootsweb.com
DearMYRTLE so it is not necessaary to waste your precious FHC time looking at this.
DearMYRTLE Family Registry indexes more than 286,000 individuals and family
DearMYRTLE BUT
DearMYRTLE BUT
DearMYRTLE BUT
DearMYRTLE THE FAMILY REGISTRY is OUTDATED.....
DearMYRTLE I believe its more advantageous to use a mail list at: www.rootsweb.com
wayneinIN I've been told that you want to order social security records as a photo copy, not a printout
Dee Myrtle - do you have the hiccoughs?
DearMYRTLE than the old FAMILY REGISTRY.
Deb meaning?
DearMYRTLE YES WAYNE....
DearMYRTLE the printout only shows the recent info.....
DearMYRTLE you want to submit a letter of request
wayneinIN and send in $7.00 to get results
DearMYRTLE now $7 with the SSN (which you find in the SSDI)
DearMYRTLE and get a copy of the ss-5 which is the original application for the number
DearMYRTLE NOT BENEFITS
DearMYRTLE where the person had to show PROOF of parents & birth or naturalization.
wayneinIN that has a lot of info about submitter
DearMYRTLE without the SSN you would have to pay twice as much!
Joyce2005 SS#s don't go back very far
Sis Is there information on Korean War vets that's not a casualty?
DearMYRTLE The SUBMITTER to the SSDI is the Social Security Administration..... whenit has received notice of a death.
wayneinIN available since 1937
DearMYRTLE RIGHT, they will only help with post 1960s deaths....
Deb What was the standard of proof for those born before recording was required?
DearMYRTLE and NOT EVERY ONE was reported to SSADMinistration.... because no need to, if no benefits.
DearMYRTLE DEB, it varied... usually a certificate of birth...
DearMYRTLE or delayed birth certificate
DearMYRTLE but failing that
DearMYRTLE sworn statements from mother and people who know both mother and child.
Deb Cause I cant find birth record of grfather yet knows he had ss
DearMYRTLE Also for the early part of the deaths in the SSDI, many are missing because they were purged form the system BEFORE folks said...
DearMYRTLE hey, we need to keep this info!
DearMYRTLE I have ANOTHER collection found at FHCs in US.......
DearMYRTLE AIS Census Index Accelerated Index System microfiche alpha-listing in 8 sections of many people who were recorded living in the US from 1607-1906, compiled from Federal Census and early tax & rent rolls. Caution: 19% error rate. Reference gives abbreviated entry or specific page, district and year of original record for accessing copy on microfilm.
DearMYRTLE NOT COMPLETE by any means.
DearMYRTLE Note that Ancestry.com has the AIS Census Index in its fee-based membership library. www.ancestry.com
DearMYRTLE So if you have a subscription to Ancestry's databases, its EASIER to search it online, you won't have
DearMYRTLE to work with the 8 different sets of microfiche, fiche reading machine, etc.
DearMYRTLE Another collection to consider...... I believe only the Washington DC Temple FHC has the complete set outside of Salt Lake.....
DearMYRTLE Family Group Record Archives (on microfilm) includes family group sheets submitted from 1942-1969 to the Gen. Society of Utah, arranged alphabetically by husband's surname. These are gradually being computerized, so check the IGI on computer first. If your ancestor's name isn't there, order a microfilm from this huge group sheet collection.
DearMYRTLE UNFORTUNATELY.....
DearMYRTLE When this collection was microfilmed, they discoverd about 10% of the pages had been ripped out of the old genealogy lineage books by patrons!
DearMYRTLE Can you believe THAT!
genealogyADM That's horrible!
DearMYRTLE This has been transcribed to the IGI by volunteers using the double entry "NameExtraction Program."
DearMYRTLE So you can pretty much SEARCH for names ONLINE, but those
DearMYRTLE OLD
DearMYRTLE family group sheets
DearMYRTLE still have a few SOURCE NOTES
DearMYRTLE that don't show up in the IGI
DearMYRTLE so you might want to get the ORIGINAL ENTRY.
DearMYRTLE For this, you'd have to be sure to order the microfilm associated with that entry in the IGI.
DearMYRTLE EVERY ONE TAKE A STRETCH.... this NEXT thing is VERY
DearMYRTLE IMPORTANT.....
DearMYRTLE so I want you rested and able to listen.......
DearMYRTLE Parish & Vital Records List PVRL - indexing what has been and is in the process of being extracted to the IGI.
DearMYRTLE THIS is a very important collection, NOT AVAILABLE ONLINE. Its a very small collection of microfiche - that packs a big punch!
DearMYRTLE THE PVRL helps you evaluate where to spend your research dollars next.
DearMYRTLE -- If they (The FHLibrary's Name Extraction Program Volunteers) are working on your ancestors' parish christening/marriage/burial records, you might wait, and work on a different line.
DearMYRTLE -- If they've done your ancestor's parish, and you don't find him listed, check to see what % of the book the extration team was able to decipher.
DearMYRTLE Sometimes, due to poor storage conditions, the original may have been damaged, therefore only 70% of the record was estimated to have been readable.
DearMYRTLE Wouldn't you just know it, YOUR ancestors might be in the missing 30%. Look for other records in the area (land, tax, voters registration, oaths of allegiance...)
DearMYRTLE (UNK's ancestry would be in that.... just to make things challenging!!!!)
DearMYRTLE HAS ANYONE looked at the PARISH & VITAL RECORDS LIST?
rikki no
BeccaRose no
DearMYRTLE DO you know what some of the column headings are?
April no
tiny no
rikki no
jackieb no, didn't know about them!
April no
Kaymiami no, didn't know what to do with it
DearMYRTLE LOCALITY (Largest to smallest jurisdiction)
DearMYRTLE NAME OF RECORD
DearMYRTLE TIME PERIOD of the record
DearMYRTLE then % of record extracted
DearMYRTLE For instance.....
DearMYRTLE KIM mentioned she had looked at BISHOP's TRANSCRIPTS....
DearMYRTLE DO you know what they are (anyone other than KIM)??????
rikki We should have went on a field trip! :)
April no
rikki no
DearMYRTLE <sipping my hot chocolate... thanks honey!>
tiny no
DearMYRTLE (I have a great husband!)
Michael2 no not me
rikki Myrt...do you loan him out?
DearMYRTLE BISHOPS TRANSCRIPTS are something we find in our English research.
DearMYRTLE Local parish priests made entries
DearMYRTLE in the parish registers
Rebelkaye marriages and deaths baptisms
DearMYRTLE each day or week as they
DearMYRTLE married people
jacky I bought the Western E. and gave it away because I also was not sure how to use it
DearMYRTLE buried people
DearMYRTLE and christened people
DearMYRTLE in the parish.
DearMYRTLE Yearly, a report was sent to the BISHOP
DearMYRTLE of each event.
DearMYRTLE Sometimes the BISHOPS's TRANSCRIPT is all that has survived.
DearMYRTLE or its what they have on microfilm.
DearMYRTLE You'd want to know if
DearMYRTLE it was the FIRST record, or the SECOND record (BISHOPS TRANSCRIPT) made of the event in the church
DearMYRTLE right?
penbay right
DearMYRTLE ok.... IF the Bishop's Transcript was extracted for a certain little parish church in England
DearMYRTLE you would find it in the PARISH & VITAL RECORDS LIST
DearMYRTLE NOT the individual christenings
DearMYRTLE but the listing of the
DearMYRTLE LOCALITY (largest to smallest)
DearMYRTLE then the TITLE
DearMYRTLE Bishops's Transcript
DearMYRTLE or PARISH REGISTER
DearMYRTLE and then the valuation on the part of the EXTRACTION TEAM
Rebelkaye is that sometimes called a parish diaries
DearMYRTLE as to their estimation of the
DearMYRTLE I think diaries are slightly different... but not sure/..... hadn't heard that term before.
DearMYRTLE There are several types of parish records, including vestry minutes, etc.
DearMYRTLE anyway....
DearMYRTLE as I said before.....
DearMYRTLE -- If they (The FHLibrary's Name Extraction Program Volunteers) are working on your ancestors' parish christening/marriage/burial records, you might wait, and work on a different line.
jacky Is the record on that disc or does it tell you where to go to find it? PVRL?
DearMYRTLE It mentions the microfilm..... of the original records, yes.
DearMYRTLE IF
DearMYRTLE and I say
DearMYRTLE If the record was extracted 100%
Kaymiami is the PVRL on microfiche?
DearMYRTLE and you DO NOT find your ancestors mentioned in the church parish register
DearMYRTLE look for a different
DearMYRTLE close by parish
DearMYRTLE for them....
DearMYRTLE using a map and running along EASY walking routes.
DearMYRTLE But if the record was NOT extracted 100% then look for OTHER RECORD TYPES in the area
DearMYRTLE for possible mention of your ancestor.
DearMYRTLE GOSH.....
DearMYRTLE this has been a LONG TALK....
DearMYRTLE and we're losing some folks....
DearMYRTLE HOW ABOUT OPENING IT UP FOR
DearMYRTLE QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS?
tiny I'm still here
jacky When you look for locality does that mean town or church?
DearMYRTLE YES... THANKS TINY.... and I know folks have
penbay Thank You MYRTLE!!! :-)
DearMYRTLE LOOK FIRST FOR THE TOWN......
DearMYRTLE then see if it is church or court records hon.
DearMYRTLE GOOD QUESTION JACKY!
DearMYRTLE or land records
DearMYRTLE so its LOCALITY - then RECORD TYPE!
DearMYRTLE Original Documents Research
DearMYRTLE In order to "spot check" previously submitted research and to find additional generations, you must begin to review original records. These were created at the time an event occurred in the life of your ancestor. Access such records without taking a trip around the world. Save travel $$$ for researching areas not yet microfilmed.
DearMYRTLE Research Outlines designed by experts at the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake guide your efforts. References are made to the sources available through the FHL as well as other significant archives. Localities include: US and each state, Canada & each province, England, Germany, Wales, Ireland, France, Tracing Immigrant Ancestors. Consult each outline at your local FHC or obtain a copy for a nominal fee.
DearMYRTLE Found ALSO ONLINE at:
cam it is hard to get info from czech I have been trying for a year
DearMYRTLE www.familysearch.org
UnkHiram ?
DearMYRTLE YES HON... UNK?
DearMYRTLE FHC Core Special Collections II & II

DearMYRTLE -------Your local LDS Family History Center volunteer will be happy to assist you with your research!---------
DearMYRTLE BUT these folks are just that VOLUNTEERS
DearMYRTLE and they had a variety of experience levels.
DearMYRTLE they may or may not have experience researching in your areas....
jacky Thank you for the help, I will try the pvrl again and not give up so fast, good night all.
UnkHiram Myrt, are you a writer or something?
UnkHiram (GRIN)
DearMYRTLE UNK..... your question hon?Q?Q?Q
tiny with more knowledge than me :')
DearMYRTLE You silly.....
DearMYRTLE You know me too well!
DearMYRTLE :)
DearMYRTLE good night JACKY!
UnkHiram LOL, sorry couldnt resist
Patricia Thanks
genealogyADM G'Night Jacky!
DearMYRTLE Additional Items at your specific FHCenter. Each FHC varies in size, hours of service, experience of volunteers and scope of collection.
DearMYRTLE Call for hours of operation and to schedule computer time in advance. As patrons order microfilms for indefinite loan, and provide microfiche, these become part of the collection which all patrons may use. In my case the following additional items are available where I volunteer:
DearMYRTLE Brandon Florida Stake, LDS Family History Center, 3400 Cortez Road, Bradenton, FL ,
DearMYRTLE MICROFILM
DearMYRTLE Indefinite Loan - Partially indexed by locality, subject or surname in the 3X5 card file and in the Indefinite Loan Binder. Larger collections include:
DearMYRTLE Germany - 120 assorted microfilms, Pennsylvania & Maine microfilms
DearMYRTLE These are our TWO BIGGEST COLLECTIONS.
DearMYRTLE From time to time I get a reader (of my column, UNK!) who says" I've been
DearMYRTLE to my local FHCenter, and spent 2 whole hours there....
DearMYRTLE BUT they didn't have a thing there for me!"
DearMYRTLE DO you know why?
tiny why?
April they didn't use all available to them
Michael3 i would say that person had not done their "home" work
UnkHiram I cant imagine that
DearMYRTLE <thanks TINY... you get an EXTRA cookie, if we can get that tray back from Rikki.....>
