Submission Guidelines
- When submitting your question, please be aware that I cannot do your
research for you. I will answer questions about genealogy research techniques,
where to find records, what the meaning of a word is, etc. In the case of a
specific research questions, I will make suggestions of possible records to
search, tell you where to find them and also provide links to related online
resources. For surname meanings, I will do my best to research my sources for
you, but there are no guarantees.
- Please include as much information as possible. Include full names
(including maiden names for female ancestors), dates (approximate dates are
OK), places, etc. I receive questions from around the world, so please don't
assume I will automatically know what country your ancestors lived in! I also
reserve the right to edit/shorten questions which are chosen for publication
on this site.
- I can't guarantee to answer all questions submitted to Ask a Genealogist,
though I will do my best to try. To give your question the best chance of
being answered, please be sure to follow all guidelines and include your name
and correct email address. I would also suggest that you post your question to
our Genealogy
Forum where a great group of fellow genealogists are always happy to
help with suggestions and advice.
- If your question is "I'm new to genealogy, where do I start" or something
similar, then you may want to consider signing up for our free online
Introduction
to Genealogy class.
- By submitting your question to Ask a Genealogist you are granting your
permission for the question to be published on About Genealogy. If your
