Grand Army of the RepublicDefinition:
An association of veterans of the Union Forces of the Civil War formed in 1866,
the Grand Army of the Republic was made up of men who served in federal service
in the Army, Navy or Marine Corps, and included at least one female member.
Membership in the Grand Army of the Republic was open only to men who had fought
in the Civil War in one of the Union forces and as a result, when the last
member died in 1956 the Grand Army of the Republic ceased to exist. The Allied
Orders of the Grand Army of the Republic were then formed to preserve the memory
of the men of the Grand Army of the Republic.

Allied Orders of the Grand Army of
the Republic
Five auxiliary organizations of the Grand Army of the Republic include the Sons
of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Auxiliary to the Sons of Union Veterans of
the Civil War, Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Ladies of the Grand
Army of the Republic, and Woman's Relief Corps.

Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic
Organization works to perpetuate the memory of the Grand Army of the Republic
and of the men who served the Union from 1861 to 1865. Membership is open to
female descendants, and legally adopted daughters, ten (10) years of age or over, of honorably
discharged Union soldiers, sailors and marines of the Civil War, 1861 to 1865. Ex-army nurses of that War, are also
eligible for membership.
