Your Email Address:

Have you ever wanted to share your prized genealogy collection of Internet Explorer Favorites or Netscape Bookmarks with friends or relatives? It's easy to create an HTML file of your favorite sites and their URLs, which can then be posted to the Web for easy viewing, or attached to an email message and sent to anyone you wish:

Sharing Favorites in Internet Explorer

  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. Select Import and Export from the File Menu
  3. When the Import & Export Wizard opens, click Next
  4. Select Export Favorites and click Next
  5. Choose the main Favorites folder, or subfolder that you wish to share
  6. Click Export to a File or Address
  7. Choose the location where you wish to save the new file and click Next
  8. Click Finish and OK

Sharing Bookmarks in Netscape Navigator

  1. Open Netscape
  2. Select Bookmarks from the main menu or press Ctrl +B to open your bookmarks menu
  3. Select the bookmark file that you want to share, then choose File/Save as from the File Menu.
  4. Choose the location on your computer where you wish to save the new file
    • Save the file as an HTML file (.htm) if you want to create a list full of clickable links or want your friends to be able to import the links into their own bookmarks program.
    • If you want a list of the names of your bookmarks as well as their URLs, save it as a text file (.txt). These URLs will be non-clickable.
  5. Click Save and the HTML bookmarks file is created in the directory that you specified.

Once you have created your HTML genealogy bookmarks / favorites file you can upload it to the Web or attach it to an email to share with your friends. Anyone with Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator can also import the links from the HTML file into their own bookmarks. As an added bonus, the file you just created also doubles as a backup to your favorites / bookmarks collection.

Share your favorite genealogy links today!
