Louisiana state law limits access to birth records of less than 100 years and death records of less than 50 years to the registrant and immediate or surviving family members.

Event: Birth

Dates: From July 1914

Cost of copy: $15.00 (long form); $9.00 (short form)

Comments: Birth records are available beginning July 1914. If this is for genealogy purposes it is in your best interest to request the long form as it provides more details. With your request include the full name of the person for whom the certificate is requested, the month, day and year of birth, the city and parish of birth, the mother's maiden name, the father's name, your relationship to the registrant and your name, address and daytime telephone number. 

* Birth records for city of New Orleans are available from 1892 and are available though the Louisiana State Archives.


Event: Death

Dates: From 1942

Cost of copy: $6.00

Comments: With your request include the full name of the decedent at death, the date of death, the sex of the decedent, the city and parish where death occurred, your relationship to the decedent and your full name, address and telephone number.

* Death records prior to 1942 (currently covering Jefferson and Orleans parishes only) are available from the Louisiana State Archives.


Event: Marriage

Dates: From July 1914

Cost of copy: $5.00 (Orleans parish only)

Comments: Please include with your request the full names of the bride (including maiden name) and groom; the date of marriage; the name of the parish where the license was issued; your relationship to the registrant and your full name, address and telephone number.

* Orleans Parish marriage records over 50 years old should be requested from the Louisiana State Archives from 1870 (index for 1831-1869). For marriage records for parishes other than Orleans, contact the Office of the Clerk of Court for that parish.


Event: Divorce

Dates: varies

Cost of copy: varies

Comments: Divorce records are available from the Clerk of Court in the parish where divorce was granted. Fees vary.
