Event: Birth

Dates: From August 1898

Cost of copy: $6.00 (Division of Vital Records); $8.00 (Maryland State Archives)

Comments: Birth records in Maryland are restricted for 100 years after the date of birth and are available from the Division of Vital Records only to the person registered; the parent or guardian of the person registered; or a legal representative (with notarized statement from the person registered). If authorized to obtain a birth record, provide the full name at birth, date of birth, place of birth (County or City), mother’s full maiden name, father’s full name, your relationship to the person named on the record and your name and mailing address.

The Maryland State Archives will provide copies of birth certificates for genealogical purposes, but you must submit proof of the individual's death such as a death certificate, funeral card or obituary notice. If you do not have proof of death, or if the person is still alive, the Archives will send you an extract of the information on the certificate. An extract includes the certificate number, the registrant's (child's) name, the date and place of birth and the names and birthplaces of the parents.

* Records for city of Baltimore are available from January 1875.
