Government registration of births, marriages and deaths in
New Brunswick began in January 1888.
The official registers include delayed registrations of births which date
back as early as 1801. Many of the earlier records have been transferred
to the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick - see events below for the

search for their birth parents or siblings through the government's Post
Adoption program. The program was recently expanded to also allow birth
mothers, fathers, as well as brothers and sisters to activate a search for
their adult children or siblings. As a general rule in Canada, prior to the early to mid 1900s when provincial authorities became involved in adoptions, children were placed with family, friends or neighbors without involvement of government authorities or official documentation.
