New Hampshire Vital Records

Birth | Death | Marriage | Divorce | Adoption

Address:
Bureau of Vital Records
6 Hazen Drive
Concord, NH 03301
Phone: (603) 271-4651
Email: vitalrecords@dhhs.state.nh.us

Remarks: Check or money order should be made payable to Treasurer, State of New Hampshire. Personal checks are accepted. If you are able to visit the office in person, they have a genealogical research vault on the premises that is open to the general public and contains the actual vital records that date back to the year 1640. One especially nice advantage to this is that you can easily request all of the records of a particular surname and search through them yourself for clues. The research center is open to the public at 8:30 - 11:45 and 12:15 - 4:00 Monday through Friday (except on Wednesday when the vault closes early at 3:30). Volunteers will help you do your research. Call or visit the Web site to verify current fees for mail requests and hours for the research room.

Event: Birth

Dates: From 1640

Cost of copy: $12.00

Comments: Birth records in New Hampshire less than 100 years old are not considered to be public and access is limited to individuals who have a "direct and tangible interest" in the record (i.e. immediate family members). State office has had records since 1640, though records prior to 1883 usually provide very little information of genealogical value (they also only cover about half the population). Additional copies ordered at the same time are $8.00 each. Include with your request as much as you know of the following: the place of birth, full name at birth, date of birth, father's name, mother's maiden name, your relationship to the individual and the reason for your request.
Application for Birth Record

*In New England, records are generally kept at the town level, rather than at the county level as in most other U.S. states. All of New Hampshire's 234 local registrars (city and town clerks) may also issue certified copies of birth certificates for births that occurred in their town.
