Event: Birth

Dates: From October 1913

Cost of copy: $10.00

Comments:  Include with your request as much as you can of the following: name of individual, county of birth, year of birth, full maiden name of mother, full name of father, your relationship to the individual named on the certificate and the reason for your request. Certified copies of birth records in N.C. are only available to the individual named on the certificate, spouse, siblings, direct ancestors, direct descendants, stepparents or stepchildren. Uncertified copies of records for genealogical purposes are available to anyone.
Application for Birth Record

* If you know the area where your ancestor lived, you will often get faster results by first checking the records in the county where the event occurred. Generally, this is the local register of deeds office, but in Mecklenburg, Durham, and Wake Counties, it is the local health department.


Event: Death

Dates: From 1913

Cost of copy: $10.00

Comments: Include with your request as much as you can of the following: name of deceased, county of death, year of death, your relationship to the individual named on the certificate and the reason for your request. Certified copies of death records in N.C. are only available to the individual named on the certificate, spouse, siblings, direct ancestors, direct descendants, stepparents or stepchildren. Uncertified copies of records for genealogical purposes are available to anyone.
Application for Death Record

For death certificates prior to 1930, contact the North Carolina State Archives. Only a few delayed death records may exist back to 1909. Prior to this, there are no death records of any sort other than wills and estate settlements in the North Carolina State Archives.

Certified copies of marriage records in N.C. are only available to the individual named on the certificate, spouse, siblings, direct ancestors, direct descendants, stepparents or stepchildren. Uncertified copies of records for genealogical purposes are available to anyone.

* Marriage records from as early as 1868 through the present are available from the county where the marriage occurred. Contact the local register of deeds office in the county where the marriage occurred. The North Carolina State Archives also has some pre-1868 bonds for about half of N.C. counties.


Event: Divorce

Dates: From January, 1958

Cost of copy: $10.00

Comments: Include with your request as much as you can of the following: full name of husband and wife, county of divorce, year of divorce, your relationship to the individual named on the certificate and the reason for your request.
