Back to Irish Roots...

http://www.local.ie/genealogy/If you're Irish, or wish you were, surfing the Web can help you learn more about the history, culture, and heritage of Ireland.  One of the best places to start is Local Ancestors, the family history site of Local Ireland.  They offer a complete step-by-step research guide to tracing your Irish ancestors, an overview of Irish family history records, information on Irish emigration, a county by county overview of family history in Ireland, a listing of major genealogy research centres throughout Ireland, and an Irish Family Register which connects people with Irish ancestry from around the world.  Also of interest to genealogists is the list of family names, with a brief history for each of their meaning and origin.

If you would like to learn more about Irish Genealogical Research, then look no further than this free self-paced class on Irish Genealogy sponsored by Mother Hubbard's Cupboard.   This class is designed to help you locate your ancestors in Ireland and to familiarize you with the different records that are available once you locate your family within a particular county or 'shire.' You will learn how to use the records from the late 1800's all the way back to the early 6th century and will also touch a little on the history of Ireland and it's people. There are 15 self-paced online lessons in all, covering topics such as "getting your family across the ocean",  Irish history and culture, parish registers, census substitutesheraldry and surnames, and  records of medieval Ireland.
