Step-by-Step Guides are like having a genealogy expert sitting on your shoulder providing you with free advice as you go about your research.  These guides provide specific instructions about how to search the record type you have chosen including tips, samples, background information and where to find the record.

Making the Most of Step-by-Step Guides

The Step-by-Step Guide screen provides a variety of options to help assist you in your research. All of these options are not necessarily available for all record types/locations.

Guide
Provides specific step-by-step instructions on how to search the record.

Tips
A series of tips presented in a question and answer type format

     Examples:
    How do I find the year and date a marriage took place?
    What if I can't find a marriage record?

Samples
An example of the record type with graphics, a brief explanation, and a list of the data fields.

Background
A brief description and background information on the type of record you are searching.

Where to Find It
A list of places, not limited to your local Family History Center, where you can typically find this type of record.

Additional Things to Do
This is located at the end of each screen in the Step-by-Step Guides and is an easy way to get back to the related Family History Library Catalog records, Web sites, and research helps.

Be sure to print out these guides and carry them with you whenever you will be researching this type of record.
