A Guide to the World's Largest Genealogy Resource: Part Three

Page 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

Related Web Sites and Research Helps

Two final tools which Research Guidance provides are Related Web sites and Research Helps.

Related Web Sites
An excellent tool in principle as it searches the large database of Web pages, including surname and family pages, which have been submitted to the FamilySearch site by visitors and FHL volunteers. Many of the large, well-known research sites are missing, however, and the smaller family history Web pages vary in the quality of their information. On the positive side, the Web sites are reviewed and are limited to genealogy/family history sites so you can at least be assured that you won't be wasting too much time wading through unrelated sites.

Research Helps
A list of related research outlines, glossaries, maps, etc., that may help you with your research.

From the bottom of the Research Helps screen for your location selection, you will also have the option to view "All Research Helps." This includes a complete list of the research outlines, worksheets, forms, collection indexes, how-tos and other research helps produced by the Family History Library. You can sort these by location, title, subject, or document type.

A Don't Miss Site!!!

The majority of the information presented in this tool was previously available on the FamilySearch Web site, but many researchers had trouble searching it out in the maze of great resources available. This new tool, which serves as a gateway to the vast resources of the FamilySearch site, is a much-needed, much-appreciated addition. It is, in my opinion, one of the best genealogy research tools on the Internet.
