FamilySearch Genealogy Glossary

This is not your ordinary list of genealogy words. The wonderful, interactive glossary from FamilySearch.org provides definitions of words and terms that you may encounter in your genealogy research around the world, including non-English words and their English translations.

You can find the genealogy Glossary tool at http://www.familysearch.org. Many people miss it, but if you look at the very top right-hand corner of the home page in the dark blue bar you will see the link for the Glossary, right between Site Map and Help.

The glossary is easy to use. Just type in the word you want to know more about and click find. Alternatively, you can select a letter from the alphabet bar and browse through all of the words which begin with that letter.

A neat alternative option in this glossary allows you to build your own custom word list based on a place, a subject, or a language - Just click on Custom Search. For example, you can click on language and then French and the tool will build you a custom glossary of French words. The tool even thoughtfully includes a link to a printable version so that you can take your custom glossary with you. Just think how helpful that glossary of French words could be sitting next to you on the desk as you wade through French records on microfilm.

Tip
You can choose several options at once and really narrow down your glossary. If you want to start over with a new glossary, however, be sure to click on Clear first!
