DNA Convergence

By Kimberly Powell, About.com

Definition: If your Haplotype, or matches an individual with a different surname, and your genealogy research shows no evidence of an extra-marital event or adoption, your match may be the result of a genetic event known as convergence. Mutations in Y-DNA over time can lead to individuals with two different surnames having a matching result in their Y-DNA markers. Convergence is more likely to be a factor in very common haplogroups such as R1b, the most common haplogroup in Western Europe.
