While genealogical research is rewarding in itself, it is always nice to receive a little financial support for your endeavors. To this end, a number of genealogical scholarships, awards, grants and fellowships are available to help applicants hoping to attend a genealogical conference or institute, to honor excellence in genealogical writing or research, or to support research projects of benefit to the genealogical community. Be sure to check the deadlines, rules and qualifications for each opportunity, but don't be afraid to apply!
11. Richard S. Lackey Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to "an experienced researcher employed in a paid or volunteer position, in the services of the genealogical community," this $500 scholarship covers full tuition at the (National Institute of Genealogical Research) NIGR, plus attendance at the Alumni Association dinner. Hotel and/or meal costs will be partially defrayed.Deadline: 11 January 2008
12. The Ruth C. Bishop Volunteer Hall of Honor Award
This prestigious award sponsored by the Federation of Genealogical Societies recognizes the generous spirit and work ethic of genealogical society volunteers, both present and past. Ruth Bishop, a special friend of FGS, personally presents the prestigious Living Volunteer Award to the recipient at the annual FGS conference banquet. The award winner also receives airfare, hotel, conference registration, and a banquet ticket for the annual FGS Conference. A cash award of $1,000.00 is also awarded to the nominating society of the Living Volunteer winner.Deadline: 17 April
13. The Donald Lines Jacobus Award
The Donald Lines Jacobus Award was established in 1972 by the American Society of Genealogists to encourage sound scholarship in genealogical writing. The award is presented annually to the author of a model genealogy published within the previous five years. Nominations for the Jacobus Award are made by Fellows of the American Society of American Genealogists.14. APG Young Professional Scholarship
The Association of Professional Genealogists (APG) awards an annual scholarship to its Professional Management Conference (including conference registration and a $500 travel award) to an "outstanding young genealogy professional" between the ages of 18 and 25.Deadline: 28 February
