England Vital Records - Births, Deaths & Marriages in England

Learn how to use Civil Registration records to help you locate your English ancestors. A multitude of databases and resources make it easy to locate a birth, marriage or death in England and Wales, and order a copy of the certificate online.

General Register Office for England & Wales
Central archive of all registrations of births, marriages and deaths that have occurred in England and Wales since 1 July 1837 includes details on how to obtain copies of a birth certificate, a marriage certificate or a death certificate.

The best source for free access to the Civil Registration Index of births, marriages and deaths in England and Wales, FreeBMD contains over 112 million transcribed records. Many of the transcribed entries are linked to actual images of the Civil Registration index. The index provides only the name, date and location of the event, plus the GRO index number.

UK BDM Exchange
This site provides information transcribed from actual birth, death and marriage certificates instead of the bare bones details provided by the typical civil registration index entry. Short-term free trial subscriptions are usually available, plus you can earn additional free time by entering information on a certificate obtained through your own family history research.

Rated as the most economical BMD subscription site by Your Family Tree, BMDindex.co.uk offers access to the entire England civil registration index from 1837 to the present as published by the GRO. They offer full name searching, not just surname too.

Commonwealth War Graves - Debt of Honour Register
Search the Commonwealth War Graves Commission database of more than 1.7 million World War I and World War II burials by surname, initials, war, year of death, regiment, force, and/or nationality.

This site serves as a clearinghouse for publishing online records compiled by Family History Societies throughout England. Over 67 million records are available, including parish registers and memorial inscriptions.

Ancestry.com includes the complete BMD Index images as part of its subscription offerings. Other birth, marriage and death records on the site include the Pallot Marriage Index and various early parish records.

Subscription or Pay-per-view
One of the original subscription-based sites for the Civil Registration records of England and Wales, FindMyPast.com (formerly 1837online.com) offers digital copies of all indexes of births, marriages and deaths (searchable only by name/quarter) for England and Wales from 1837 to 2005. Also, Death Duty Registers, Deaths at Sea and other vital records.

Subscription or Pay-per-view
This pay-as-you-go site includes all known Civil Registration Index images from 1837 to 2003. They offer a fully searchable database for births, marriages and deaths in England and Wales from 1866 to 1920 as well as 1984 to 2003. The remaining years (1837-1865 and 1921-1983) are searchable by surname only.
