Ancestry of Pope John Paul II

Known to his friends as "Lolek," Karol Jozef Wojtyla (voy TIH wah) came from humble beginnings in the town of Wadowice, 35 miles southwest of Krakow, Poland. He was the second son of Karol Wojtyla Sr., a retired army officer and tailor, and Emilia Kaczorowska Wojtyla, a schoolteacher of Lithuanian descent. Sorrow marred his young life as first his mother died just a month before Lolek's ninth birthday, followed by his older brother Edmund of scarlet fever less than four years later.
On October 16, 1978, Karol Wojtyla was chosen as the first Polish Pope in history, and the first non-Italian since the sixteenth century. The 264th pontiff took the name John Paul II in honor of his predecessor and served as the leader of the Roman Catholic Church for 26 years.
