The
1940 US census is truly the census of "The Greatest Generation," the last census taken before America entered World War II. Who better to find in this census than television journalist Tom Brokaw, one of the biggest champions for collecting and preserving the stories of these proud men and women. In the 1940 census Tom Brokaw appears as a 2-month-old baby, living in a hotel in Bristol, South Dakota, with his parents, Anthony Orville "Red" Brokaw and Eugenia "Jean" (Conley) Brokaw.
1 His grandfather, William J. Brokaw, is living nearby, enumerated as a widow.
2 Because they were living in a hotel, the Brokaws were enumerated on April 9 on the "transient" schedule on page 81 for South Dakota enumeration district 19-3.
