Connecticut Vital Records - Births, Deaths & Marriages

If requesting a State issued certificate, a personal check or money order should be made payable to the Treasurer, State of Connecticut. Or, a personal check or money order made payable to the clerk of the town/city where the birth occurred. Call first to verify current fees. All requests must be accompanied by a photocopy of the requestor's drivers license.

Birth Records:

Dates: From July 1, 1897 (state), earlier birth records at town or city level

Cost of copy: $15.00 (state issued), $5.00 (city/town issued)

Comments: State law restricts access to birth records less than 100 years old to the registrant, immediate family members or others representing a tangible interest in the record.

With your request, include as much as you can of the following information: the full name of the person listed on the certificate, date of birth, place of birth, full name of father, full maiden name of mother, your relationship to the person whose certificate you are requesting, your address and daytime phone number.

* Earlier Connecticut birth records, many dating back to 1700s, are available from the town or city of birth.

Death Records:

Dates: July 1, 1897 (state), earlier death records at town or city level

Cost of copy: $5.00

Comments: Connecticut death records are available to the general public (anyone over 18 years of age). With your request, include at least the following information: the full legal name of the deceased, approximate date of death and the town in which the death occurred.

The social security number of the deceased will not be included on the certificate that you receive, unless you are a member of the immediate family.

Marriage Records:

Dates: July 1, 1897 (state), earlier death records at town or city level

Cost of Copy: $5.00

Comments: Connecticut marriage certificates are open to the general public (anyone over 18 years of age). With your request, include at least the names of the wife and husband, the approximate date of marriage and the city or town in which the marriage took place.

The social security numbers of the bride and groom will not be included on the certificate that you receive, unless you are the bride, groom, officiator of the marriage, or town clerk.

Comments: For a certificate of Dissolution of Marriage or Civil Union contact the Clerk of Superior Court where the dissolution of marriage/civil union was granted. The State Office of Vital Records does not record dissolution decrees and cannot issue certified copies.
