Personal check or money order should be made payable to the Treasurer, State of New Jersey. Credit card payments and cash can not be accepted through the mail. Genealogy requests for certificates of birth, marriage or death are typically processed within 14 to 16 weeks. Call or visit the Web site to verify current fees or to download an application form.

The cost per record (non-certified) from the NJ State Archives is $10.00, which also covers a search of up to five consecutive years.

New Jersey Birth Records:

Dates: From May 1848
Cost of copy: $25.00 (from state office); $10.00 (N.J. State Archives)
Comments: The State Vital Records Office has records since June 1878. Additional copies of same record ordered at same time are $2.00 each. If the exact date is unknown, the fee is an additional $1.00 per year searched. Proof of identify is required for all documents. Proof of relationship is required for certified copies, but not for certifications (non-certified copies, good for genealogy requests).

Births from May 1848 - December 1900 are available through the New Jersey State Archives. The fee is $10.00 for one record searched in up to five years plus $10.00 for each additional five years; the Archives will search for up to 3 records per request.

New Jersey Divorce Records:

Dates: Varies
Cost of copy: $6.00
Comments: The New Jersey Superior Court Public Information Center has all divorce records for 1901 to 1992/3. Divorce records since 1992/3 are still filed with each county court. The Superior Court does have an index, which will provide the file number and citation to county court.
