Reader Stories: Making a Living from Genealogy

From Jessica Taylor

How Did You First Get Started in Genealogy?

I'd always been curious about genealogy as a child, through stories my dad told me about our ancestors.

Starting My Genealogy Business

I received a bachelor's degree in Family History - Genealogy from Brigham Young University and this gave me a good outlook towards genealogy as a profession. I started working on the bottom rung at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah and made a lot of friends there. Those contacts helped me find my first clients. I now work with a professional company, Legacy Tree Genealogy (http://legacy-tree.com) and we research family trees for clients all over the country.

Tips and Tricks

  • Get to know people in the professional genealogy field if you can. When you have the opportunity to work for clients, make your work as professional as you can. Provide them with a well-written report of your research.

Tips for Attracting/Finding Clients
