From Charles Semler

My Most Wanted Ancestor

I have looked for my maternal grandfathers place of birth and parents. My grandfather was an orphan, and my mother always said he was born in the Greencastle Pa. area. He always celebrated his birthday on July 4 ,and said he was born in 1880. He lived to be 80 years old. He had no known brothers or sisters. His name was Guy R. Hessong. I searched for years for him under the name Hessong to no avail. This past winter, I was searching the Family Genealogy site, and I put his name in as Hissong. The search came back with the name Guy Hyssong. He was living in Hagerstown Md in the 1880 census and was 9 months old.

Research & Records

I have searched the US census and the Family Genealogy search site. I found him in the Family Genealogy search site under the name Guy Hyssong. He was living with his mother Louisa Hyssong and a 9 year old brother Ross. He was born in Pa. 9 months prior to the 1880 census, but I don't know the birth site. I believe it was in Franklin Co. Pennsylvania. I don't know his father's name or mother's maiden name. His mother probably gave him up very young, and someone changed his name to Hessong, or just misspelled it and he became known by that name. I was unable to find his mother, or brother Ross in any later censuses in Maryland or Pennsylvania. I found my grandfather in the 1900 census living with a family by the name of Taylor, in Washington County, Maryland. He was a farm laborer at that time.

Advice

  • I would like to know where my grandfather was born, and if there is a record of it. I would like to know his father's name, and birth place and his mother's maiden name, her parents and her birth place.

Additional Details

I know my grandfather was born in Sept. 1879 in Pa , and 9 months later he was living in Hagerstown Md with his mother Louisa Hyssong and 9 year old brother Ross Hyssong. I believe his mother either died , or gave him up shortly thereafter. He lived his entire life in Wash Co. Md., and died in 1960
