Coffin Chic

Wednesday October 18, 2006
Adding another dimension to the saying "fan for life," Major League Baseball has entered into a licensing agreement with Eternal Image to create coffins and urns emblazoned with the colors and insignia of MLB baseball teams. The company also hopes to negotiate similiar agreements with NASCAR, the NFL and the NHL.

These strange coffins appear to be part of a growing trend. Individuality has gone beyond the grave marker, to coffins, clothing and even what individuals choose to have buried with them. Eagle Custom Caskets in Piqua, Iowa, builds biker-themed coffins decorated with Harley-Davidson parts. Dallas, Texas-based WhiteLight creates photomural Art Caskets with themes ranging from "The Last Hole" golfing casket to "The Race is Over" NASCAR casket. People are even asking to be buried with their cell phones, a high-tech version of the coffin bell, I guess.

Even more unusual funeral practices include biodegradable coffins and paper mache urns and an underground memorial cemetery reef.

Prefer to keep it simple? How about a cardboard casket?

In the article about MLB caskets and urns, the Eternal Image link erroneously goes to Eagle Caskets.
