1.2 Million More Records Added to National Burial Index at FindMyPast.com

Friday February 15, 2008
FindMyPast.com announced today that it has added another 1.2 million National Burial Index records to its existing online collection of UK family history records. The new records cover the counties of Somersetsire, Dorset and Essex and have been contributed by he Somersetand Dorset Family History Society as part of an arrangement with the Federation of Family History Societies (FFHS) to transfer their local family history society records to findmypast.com.

The additional records bring the total to over 11 million burials in the online database, taken from the National Burial Index (NBI), a finding aid for burials that took place in England and Wales between the years 1538 and 2005 (most from the years prior to civil registration which as enacted in 1837). The NBI includes records from parish registers, non-conformist registers, Roman Catholic, Jewish and other registers as well as cemetery and cremation records.

I was delighted to find a few of my husband's Somerset ancestors in the new database, although I'd already located these burials previously either through online parish transcriptions, or through a search of parish records at the Family History Library. These new National Burial Index records can be accessed through an Explorer subscription package or with pay-per-view units at www.findmypast.com.
