Millions of New Newspaper Records at GenealogyBank

Thursday March 6, 2008
GenealogyBank, known for its historical newspaper and obituary collections, adds new records on a regular basis, but this week has been especially busy, with millions of new newspaper records and documents added to the subscription-based site. On Tuesday, over 4 million new historical newspaper records and documents from 24 states were added, and then today GenealogyBank launched a Hispanic Newspapers collection, beginning with 20 titles from 4 states (Indiana, Missouri, New Mexico and Texas) covering the years 1855 to 1956. The entire collection of Hispanic newspapers will eventually span 1808-1980. These new records bring the total document count at GenealogyBank to over 221 million! I'm still waiting for additional years of the Philadelphia Inquirer to be added, but Tom says they're coming...

GenealogyBank records are only available through a subscription, but a 30-day trial is currently available for $9.95.

(1) Dead Librarian says:

Genealogy Bank is a product of Newsbank, a database that many libraries subscribe to. Our library just subscribed to the South Carolina newspaper product of GenealogyBank. Patrons with a library card number may use it free…even from home. Check with your local library and see if they subscribe to this database. If they don’t have it put in your two cents. Libraries do listen!

So sad that some libraries don’t realize that when they subscribe to NewBank, they no longer get the product they had a few years back. It used to be that when you went to a library to use NewsBank, you were able to access everything. Now, they’ve pulled almost all the obituaries out to make it a separate subscription entity. What a shame. They (LDS) gets richer and the poor people who can’t afford a researcher, or research trips, get tripped up. Shame on you.
