Online Resources
in English
Introduction
Genealogy is very popular in the Netherlands. So the archives are
crowded, and on the internet there are a lot of genealogical sites. But of
course the most of them are written in Dutch. Not an easy language for a
foreigner. Below you will find a list of the major sites in English.
Digital resources
The State Archives are very busy with the GenLias-project.
It will become an index to all marriages in the period 1811-1922, and also a lot
of births and deaths. The database is not finished yet, but you can use it
already. They do not charge you anything, you only have to register. A very good
starting point for your genealogical research in the Netherlands.
Another important site is Digital resources. You will find here an almost complete list of links to all the digital resources available for the Netherlands and Belgium, sorted by province. The internet databases are all described in English.
Other sites
Not all the archives have a proper English site, but you will at
least find their URL at Archives
Web. If you are looking for living relatives, try the online
phone directory. Choose 'Nederland' under the heading 'Regio', and you will
get all the entries for a certain surname in the Netherlands.
